Looks like a new movie based on the game is finally happening.<\/p>\n<p>James Wan, who was announced in 2015 to be producing a big-budget adaptation of the popular fighting game, is still involved in the production, which will shoot in Adelaide, Australia according to a press release and <a href=\"https:\/\/bloody-disgusting.com\/movie\/3560897\/james-wan-produced-mortal-kombat-movie-finally-happening-simon-mcquoid-directing\/\">Bloody-Disgusting.com<\/a>. Simon McQuoid will make his feature directorial debut with the New Line Cinema movie. Plot details are still tightly wrapped and protected by Goro&#8217;s arms, but we do know that the current draft of the script is from Greg Russo.<\/p>\n<p>Back in March 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.com\/james-wans-mortal-kombat-reboot-updated-cast\/\">CBR<\/a> reported a breakdown of the characters fan can expect to see in the new movie.<\/p>\n<p>A new character, meant to be the audience&#8217;s &#8220;in&#8221; to the Outworld tournament in which our &#8220;kombatants&#8221; battle, will be protagonist Cole Turner. Cole is &#8220;a single father and former boxer recruited by Jackson &#8216;Jax&#8217; Bridges to\u00a0join a team of human fighters and defend the Earth&#8221; against fierce fighters from another world. Cole&#8217;s daughter, Emily, is reportedly &#8220;12 years old and already a surprising fighter in her own right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Classic\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> characters like\u00a0Sonya Blade, Kano, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, and Raiden (the God of Thunder!) will join Cole as they train to defend our planet from all the bad things literally fighting for control of it.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> franchise is sorely overdue for an upgrade on the big screen. Fans loved the guilty pleasure-y 1995 film, which may be the best video game adaptation ever. But 1997&#8217;s low-budget and critically panned sequel,\u00a0<em>Mortal Kombat: Annihilation<\/em>, soured audiences and put the franchise on ice. The property won back the goodwill of fans with the short-lived but critically praised webseries that streamed on\u00a0Machinima.com&#8217;s YouTube channel from 2011 to 2013.<\/p>\n<p>James Wan&#8217;s horror pedigree (<em>The Conjuring<\/em>) coupled with his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/aquaman\/197405\"><em>Aquaman<\/em><\/a> success seems like the perfect fit for this video game&#8217;s next shot at silver screen success.
