What better way to spend the Fourth of July weekend than with a movie about a pagan holiday that occurs every 90 years? But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing. From the visionary mind of Ari Aster comes a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight.

Aster made his feature directorial debut with Hereditary, which set a very high bar in terms of quality and scares and world-building. Judging by Midsommar‘s slow-burn, less-is-more marketing campaign, his follow-up seems more than up to the challenge. Like Hereditary before it, Midsommar has garnered significant early buzz with the help of its moody trailers and posters. At this point, we don’t wanna see anymore footage and spoil ourselves. (Also, we’re HUGE scaredy-cats. Seriously, just writing this is gonna give us day terrors.)

Midsommar hits theaters July 3.
