Maybe inevitable?

Second Place – ‘The Intruder’

Despite having the smallest of the weekend’s wide releases, The Intruder (Sony/Screen Gems) managed to overcome the rest of the newcomers and secure the #2 spot, making $11 million domestically in just 2,222 theaters. This is also great news for director Deon Taylor, whose last film Traffik (Lionsgate) made less than Intruder did in its entire six-week run.

And Third – ‘Long Shot’

The votes are in, and it looks like Long Shot (Lionsgate) will be a minor flop by the end of its run. The R-rated political romantic comedy reportedly cost $40 million to make, but it only earned $10 million in its opening weekend domestically, plus $3.3 million internationally. This is despite playing in 3,230 theaters, having the star power of Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron, and boasting stellar reviews from critics.

Judging from how other romantic comedies of varying quality have struggled at the box office in 2019 so far, it’s looking like audiences are getting more and more used to consuming their guilty pleasure movies at home through streaming.
