However, we&#8217;re all united in our love for a good comedy \u2013 and we all probably need a laugh with all the real-world strife. With\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/long-shot\/258655\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Long Shot<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0arriving in theaters this weekend, here are movies that don\u2019t take politics too seriously, whether they\u2019re cynical in their satirization of government or they\u2019re hopeful about the inner workings of Washington.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Caveat: The politicians in the films on this list skew almost exclusively white and male, but for decades, so did politics.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Long Shot<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0features Charlize Theron\u2019s Secretary of State character running for this country\u2019s highest office, so films are evolving to better represent the population, just as the candidates and elected officials are off-screen as well.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1. The American President (1995)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While most of these comedies take a satirical look at Washington,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The American President<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is as sincere as you\u2019d expect from writer Aaron Sorkin, a.k.a. the man who went on to make the idealistic\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">West Wing<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Widowed world leader Andrew Shepherd (Michael Douglas) is in the midst of a reelection campaign, but a romance with lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade (Annette Bening) threatens to derail the possibility of a second term. All the normal romcom misunderstandings make an appearance, but there\u2019s a particular delight in watching the most powerful man in the world struggle to handle the basics of (then) modern dating. Not everything has aged well with this Rob Reiner-directed film, but President Shepherd\u2019s final speech to win back the girl \u2013 and ultimately the country \u2013 is as effectively rousing as ever. You won\u2019t know whether to text the person you love or go to the polls (you can do both).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2. In The Loop (2009)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/usYOeaOaKpo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Before HBO\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Veep<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Armando Iannucci made this cheerfully vulgar film that features far more \u2013 and far better \u2013 insults than any primary debate to date. Shot documentary style as a spin-off to\u00a0Ianucci\u2019s\u00a0TV series\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Thick of It<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the Loop<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0centers on the aftermath of a (mis)statement by a U.K. government official (Tom Hollander) that might just send Great Britain and the U.S. to war. Peter Capaldi is absolutely vicious as a communications director whose communication style does little to calm international relations, and James Gandolfini\u2019s role as an American general makes us wish he\u2019d been able to do more comedy. For more poison-dipped barbs,\u00a0Ianucci\u2019s\u00a0latest film,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Death of Stalin<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(2017), is just as good, while it satirizes the struggle for power in Cold War-era Russia. Regular guy Dave (Kevin Kline) bears a striking resemblance to President Bill Mitchell (also Kline), so when the leader of the free world has a debilitating stroke, Dave is brought in by the power-hungry chief of staff (Frank Langella) to impersonate the president. The swap fools the American people \u2013 and a bunch of real-life politicians and pundits from both sides of the aisle who make cameos \u2013 but the First Lady (Sigourney Weaver) suspects something is up. Kline is sweet and silly as a man who\u2019s gleeful about everything the role entails, but especially the chance to help people.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dave<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(both the film and the character) is refreshingly earnest and a reminder that some people who work in public service take the \u201cservice\u201d part of the title seriously.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">4. Instead,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thank You for Smoking<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has a caustic wit that burns on contact, thanks to Reitman\u2019s script and the lead performance from Aaron Eckhart. The actor stars as a tobacco lobbyist whose brand of smarm and charm makes him excel at his job and attracts the attention of extreme anti-smoking activists. Based on Christopher Buckley\u2019s novel,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thank You for Smoking<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is broad in its aims, targeting the tobacco industry as well as elected officials\u2019 cozy relationships with lobbyists. Even Hollywood itself doesn\u2019t emerge unscathed for its role in promoting the deadly habit. Dick (1999)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Oscar-winning drama\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All the President\u2019s Men<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0may be the more historically accurate on-screen reflection of the Watergate scandal, but\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dick<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is certainly the more fun one. Kirsten Dunst and Michelle Williams star as two giggly girls who accidentally stumble upon the Watergate break-in, causing Richard Nixon (Dan\u00a0Hedaya) to hire them as presidential dog walkers to keep them close and quiet. He and his staff assume the teens know what\u2019s going on, but these delightful ditzes don\u2019t know much of anything. Director Andrew Fleming\u2019s cast features alumni from\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Saturday Night Live<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Kids in the Hall<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, including Will Ferrell and Bruce McCulloch as Woodward and Bernstein, as well as a young Ryan Reynolds.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Dick<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is steeped in the \u201870s, and its retro fashion and decor are almost as much fun as its silly plotline and goofy portrayals of towering historical figures.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">6. But after the success of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Paths of Glory<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Spartacus<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lolita<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, director Stanley Kubrick turned his attention to his adaptation of the novel\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Red Alert<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with his sharply honed script turning the oh-so-serious source material into a hilariously pointed satire. Rogue U.S. general Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden) has launched a nuclear attack on the U.S.S.R at the height of the Cold War, and it\u2019s up to a room of political and military leaders to stop him \u2013\u202fand stop mutually assured destruction. George C. Scott is a live wire as General Buck\u00a0Turgidson, while Peter Sellers plays a trio of roles, all to perfection: a British Air Force captain, the U.S. president, and the deranged doctor of the title. Reese Witherspoon\u2019s type-A Tracy Flick is running unopposed for student body president, but history teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick) doesn\u2019t want to see the ambitious overachiever win. He convinces popular but dim football player Paul Metzler (Chris Klein) to run against her, sparking an election filled with corruption and tampering.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Election<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0isn\u2019t quite as scathing \u2013 or as controversial \u2013 as Payne\u2019s previous film,\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Citizen Ruth<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, but it\u2019s even better in its execution, as darkly funny as it is smart.
