And now, after two months at the box office, Marvel is releasing an extended cut of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Endgame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which could carry it past <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to become the highest grossing film of all time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are we about to say \u201cI love you 3 billion?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HxdlFQ4feAY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><b>Tuesday, June 25:\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cumulative total: $834.5 million (domestic) + $1.91 billion (international) = $2.75 billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>All-time Box Office Standings:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd highest grossing film of all time worldwide ($2.75 billion)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd highest grossing film of all time internationally ($1.91 billion)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd highest grossing film of all time domestically ($834.5 million)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We haven\u2019t updated this countdown in over month, simply because the onslaught of box office competition finally slowed down the daily numbers for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Endgame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Since we last checked in, the film has remained firmly planted in the #2 spot of all-time worldwide box office and all-time international box office. It <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> climbed the rankings, however, for domestic box office, as expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s right, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Endgame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> quantum leaped over <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Infinity War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to become the second highest grossing film in North America. But it\u2019s still over $100 million shy of topping <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the current record holder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film stands a better chance of narrowly beating out <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the worldwide record. It only has to make another $38 million internationally to become the highest grossing film ever. So&#8230;how can it possibly do this nine weeks into its release?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marvel has a plan for that. They\u2019re rereleasing <em>Avengers: Endgame<\/em> into<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0more theaters, <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/avengers-endgame-rerelease-new-footage\/\">but with additional footage<\/a>. According to Kevin Feige, we know there will be a deleted scene shown after the credits, plus a \u201ctribute\u201d of some sort and some \u201cother surprises.\u201d They\u2019re also including a video introduction by Anthony Russo and a tease for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019re even giving out free collectible artwork to hopefully entice fans interested in a rewatch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will this work? It\u2019s hard to say. The film is only playing in 985 theaters at this point (in North America), and it faces competition from other Disney movies, funny enough, like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toy Story 4<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aladdin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That said, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain Marvel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received a surprise box office bump late into its release when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came out, so Marvel might be hoping the same can happen for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man: Far From Home <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do-si-dos into theaters on July 2.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By putting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into more theaters again and packaging it with bonus material, they\u2019re bound to incentivize some fans to see the film a second or third time (one fan has seen it over 100 times, in fact). We don\u2019t know if it\u2019ll be enough to close the gap, but Marvel isn\u2019t giving up without a fight. But a mild Thursday box office for the MCU film wasn\u2019t enough to keep it from cruising past <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titanic <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to become the 5th highest grossing film in North America with $660 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next up? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Infinity War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which finished its run at $678.8 million last year. Even with some new competition entering the fray, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should have no trouble reaching the #4 spot by Sunday, but if it drops in a major way domestically, it might not be able to overcome <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the #3 spot for another week or so. The film managed to surpass <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to become the 6th highest grossing film ever in North America with $652.9 million after just two weeks at the box office. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This coming weekend will be a major testing ground for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if it hopes to surpass <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to become the biggest movie of all time, but box office estimations have it acquiring both the domestic and global crown eventually, barring some kind of unprecedented drop in the coming weeks ahead. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Tuesday, May 7: <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cumulative total: $632 million (domestic) + $1.6 billion (international) = $2.23 billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>All-time Box Office Standings: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd highest grossing film of all time worldwide ($2.23 billion)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2nd highest grossing film of all time internationally ($1.6 billion)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7th highest grossing film of all time domestically ($632 million)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been out in theaters around the world for almost two weeks, and it\u2019s already on the heels of the biggest film of all time: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After another solid Tuesday, the film has inched ever closer to matching the James Cameron blockbuster event that collected over $2.7 billion worldwide almost a decade ago thanks to 3D ticket sales and its longevity in theaters. It will likely take a couple of days for the film to surpass <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jurassic World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is another $20 million ahead. No film has ever made this kind of money so quickly, and we\u2019ve yet to see a slowdown. At $1.78 billion, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will likely soon surpass both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Infinity War <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to reach the Top 3 films worldwide. For international releases, it\u2019s already the fourth highest grossing film ever, moving right past <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furious 7 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In eight days, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has already made well over half of what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the highest grossing film of all time) accumulated in 34 weeks. The numbers aren\u2019t quite as monumental domestically, but they\u2019re still rising at a fast clip. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managed to jump over <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E.T.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shrek 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dark Knight Rises<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it the 17th highest grossing film in the states with $452 million and counting. That\u2019s just a little under half of what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Force Awakens <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made in its entire domestic run ($936 million), which is still the record to beat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Wednesday, May 1: <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cumulative total: $426 million (domestic) + $1.05 billion (international) = $1.48 billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>New records broken: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Highest grossing imported film of all time ($463 million in China)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In just seven days, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is already the eighth highest grossing film of all time (worldwide), surpassing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Age of Ultron <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s now the 20th highest grossing film domestically, surpassing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hunger Games: Catching Fire<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And it\u2019s also now the highest grossing film in the time travel genre, surpassing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Trek <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2009) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">X-Men: Days of Future Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at these numbers, you might wonder why <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lags a bit in some domestic categories outside of the initial Friday and Saturday. And it\u2019s perhaps because those top-grossing \u201csingle-day\u201d films came out during a holiday, like Memorial Weekend for example. In those cases, Sunday and Monday grosses tend to be a bit higher, which is why <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managed to grab the #2 spot for Non-Holiday Mondays. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mentioned yesterday that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stands a real chance of beating <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Force Awakens <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the domestic box office title, but new projections have the film finishing at just under $900 million domestically, at least $36 million below the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">film. This would likely be due to a crowded summer box office, as we\u2019ve mentioned, but it\u2019s hard not to wonder if <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will blast those predictions like it did during its opening weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Tuesday, April 30: <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Cumulative total: $394 million (domestic) + $948 million (international) = $1.34 billion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>New records broken: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biggest opening release in Russia ($7.8 million)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fastest film to reach $300 million and $350 million domestically<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re in the post-beginning-of-the-endgame now, and Marvel\u2019s massive event movie shows no signs of dusting away its momentum. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scored $36.7 million domestically on Monday, $10 million more than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infinity War <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulled off on the same day last year. Internationally, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finally opened in Russia, breaking the record there with $7.8 million. It pulled in $82.2 million in all international markets combined, making for a tremendous $1.34 billion worldwide after just six days since the film debuted in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When this all started, I couldn\u2019t help but wonder if <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would face sharper drops on Sunday and Monday, going by the assumption that a lot of audiences might want to see the film before getting spoiled on it, thus the opening days could be front-loaded with higher numbers that would drop off severely. Of course, the numbers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped (as expected), but not drastically compared to other films at this scale. That said, the record for single-day domestic gross on Monday after release is still held firmly by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Panther <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though not by much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conventional wisdom says that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reaching $2.1 billion is almost a foregone conclusion at this point, making it a clear contender for the third highest-grossing film of all time (it\u2019s already in the Top 10 after less than a week, to be clear). The real question is whether or not it can steal the domestic crown from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For now, all signs point to a resounding&#8230;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probably<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> faces no blockbuster competition until <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detective Pikachu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opens next weekend, then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aladdin <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two weeks after that. Thanks to positive reviews, years of marketing momentum in the form of actual movies, and an unprecedented release rollout from Disney, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stands a real chance of getting to $1 billion domestically before the summer ends (or begins?) and definitely hitting $2 billion worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing appears to be certain. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will absolutely reach $2 billion and surpass <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infinity War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means it will also probably beat <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars: The Force Awakens <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and reach the Top 3 highest grossing films of all time, right behind <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avatar <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titanic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s hard to imagine a pop cultural phenomenon of this scale sweeping the world again anytime soon, but the folks at Marvel have pulled off something extraordinary. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just about the money. These films have managed to translate a bold experiment in movie magic that essentially the entire world has shown up to see as quickly as possible, thus giving the distributor enough confidence to roll this out in just about every theater across the U.S. That\u2019s no small feat, and it\u2019s not like this was, as Thanos would put it, inevitable. It\u2019s the result of 22 films of various genres coalescing under a single roadmap to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endgame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, woven together in such a way that gets audiences to feel like this experience of seeing the film \u201cfirst\u201d matters.
