Each week on <\/span>Atom Insider<\/span>, we break down the box office numbers for all of the biggest films opening in theaters. This week, the latest superhero movie from Warner Bros. lost its two-week streak as #1 to the latest horror movie from Warner Bros., which is yet another entry in the \u201cConjuringverse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This Week’s Top Earner \u2013 ‘<\/span>The Curse of La Llorona’<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Curse of La Llorona <\/span><\/i><\/a>had a weaker opening weekend domestically than any of the six previous films in the <\/a><\/span>Conjuring <\/span><\/i>series from Blumhouse and Warner Bros. But its $26.5 million domestic take was more than enough to unseat <\/span>Shazam!<\/span><\/i>, which is now in its third week at the box office. Internationally, <\/span>Llorona <\/span><\/i>is doing even better, as it now has a worldwide showing of $56.5 million off of a reported budget of $9 million. Looks like a sequel might just come back to haunt us.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Second Place \u00a0\u2013 ‘<\/span>Shazam!’<\/span><\/h2>\n

The DC superhero comedy brought in $17.3 million domestically over the weekend, easily securing the #2 spot after a 29.1% drop. That\u2019s not much considering the film is still playing in over 4,100 theaters, and with <\/span>Avengers: Endgame <\/span><\/i>less than a week away, it\u2019s looking like <\/span>Shazam!<\/a> <\/span><\/i>will land somewhere close to <\/span>Ant-Man <\/span><\/i>in terms of superhero box office. Considering its comparably lower reported budget of $100 million, however, a worldwide box office of $322.8 million and counting isn\u2019t something to laugh at.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And Third \u00a0\u2013 ‘<\/span>Breakthrough’<\/span><\/h2>\n

The faith-based-on-a-true-story film from Fox 2000 brought in $11.1 million domestically, which isn\u2019t a bad start for a film with a reported budget of $14 million. Compared to other \u201cChristian” movies,\u00a0<\/span>Breakthrough<\/a> <\/span><\/i>edged out <\/span>Soul Surfer<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Star<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>God\u2019s Not Dead<\/span><\/i>, but didn\u2019t quite reach the heavenly heights of <\/span>Risen <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>War Room<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n

You don\u2019t see this every week. <\/span>Captain Marvel<\/a> <\/span><\/i>moved up two spots to #4 this week and brought in <\/span>more <\/span><\/i>money domestically. It made $9.1 million despite losing 322 theaters, likely thanks to anticipation for <\/span>Avengers: Endgame<\/span><\/i> bringing in repeated or last-minute viewings from Marvel fans. The film will certainly surpass <\/span>Spider-Man <\/span><\/i>in the next few days as the third highest-grossing superhero origin story film, and it\u2019s also now the third highest-grossing alien invasion film in the sci-fi genre, right behind <\/span>The Avengers <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Little <\/span><\/i>(Universal)<\/span> shrunk 45.1% in its second week with $8.4 million domestically, dropping three spots to #5. <\/span>Dumbo <\/span><\/i>(Disney) fell just one spot to #6 with $6.8 million in its fourth week. And <\/span>Pet Sematary <\/span><\/i>(Paramount) fell three spots to #7 with $4.8 million domestically in its third week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite playing in over 3,400 theaters (and gaining some from last week), <\/span>Missing Link <\/span><\/i>(United Artists\/LAIKA) only rose one spot to #8 with just $4.3 million domestically in its second week. The film\u2019s international box office hasn\u2019t been reported, but considering estimates for its production budget being as high as $60 million, things aren\u2019t looking great for stop-motion animation films at the box office right now. Of LAIKA\u2019s six films, <\/span>Missing Link <\/span><\/i>is at the very bottom by a wide margin, with little hope of catching up.<\/span><\/p>\n

Us <\/span><\/i>(Universal)<\/span> dropped two spots to #9 (a smaller drop than last week) with $4.2 million domestically. Now in its fifth week, <\/span>Us <\/span><\/i>is only a week or two away from surpassing <\/span>Get Out <\/span><\/i>to become the third highest-grossing R-rated horror film of all time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last, we have <\/span>Hellboy <\/span><\/i>(Lionsgate), which really sunk to the depths of the box office in just its second week at #10, dropping a whopping seven spots. It made $3.8 million in over 3,300 domestic theaters, a sharp drop of 67.8%. With a reported budget of $50 million and only $19.6 million so far, it\u2019s looking like <\/span>Hellboy <\/span><\/i>will be one of the year\u2019s biggest flame-outs.<\/span><\/p>\n

And They’re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n

After <\/span><\/i>(Aviron Pictures) fell three spots to #11, making just $2.5 million in its second week. And <\/span>the Best of Enemies <\/span><\/i>plummeted seven spots to #17 with just $6110,000 in over 1,000 theaters. There were a lot of limited releases debuting this week all over the charts, including <\/span>Kalank<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Little Woods<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Red Joan<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Under the Silver Lake<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Fast Color<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Hail Satan?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

And just one new film debuted outside of the Top 10 despite playing in over 1,800 domestic theaters: <\/span>Penguins <\/span><\/i>(Disneynature), which only made $2.3 million. That easily makes <\/span>Penguins <\/span><\/i>the lowest opening weekend for a Disneynature film behind <\/span>Monkey Kingdom<\/span><\/i>, which made almost double that amount.<\/span><\/p>\n
