With\u00a0Avengers: Endgame<\/em><\/a> almost upon us, it’s time to look back on all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that helped us get this far. Or, in the case of War Machine, the one MCU movie we never got — but, man, do we wish we did.<\/p>\n

We’ve known that Marvel once considered giving Don Cheadle’s Rhodey his own War Machine standalone movie —\u00a0Black Panther<\/em><\/a> co-writer Joe Robert Cole was working on it at one point. But what we didn’t know is that Marvel intended to turn Rhodey into their version of The Fugitive.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

“We kicked it around a bit,” Cheadle revealed to\u00a0Entertainment Weekly<\/em> <\/a>in a recent interview. “There was definitely going to be a lot of tension between his job as a military man and his allegiances to the code that he swore an oath to uphold, versus the changing world. I think they probably would have run afoul of each other a little bit.”<\/p>\n

The actor goes on to say that while he doesn’t know if the movie’s plot would have seen Rhodey and\/or War Machine being “decommissioned,” there was “definitely going to be some tension between those two worlds.”<\/p>\n

If any character in the MCU could have pulled off such an action movie, it would be Rhodey. His military ties, coupled with his loyalty to being an Avenger, are perfect fodder for the type of conflict that would lead to an on-the-run style thriller. This would not be the first time Marvel went down a fugitive-y path; Bruce Banner was on the run in 2008’s The<\/em>\u00a0Incredible Hulk.\u00a0<\/em>But unlike Banner, Rhodey gives that story more mileage as a character. Being both loyal soldier and dedicated superhero come with two agendas that don’t exactly shake hands, and War Machine’s brief turn as Iron Patriot in\u00a0Iron Man 3<\/em> could have been the perfect launch pad to explore these conflicts of interest in a chase movie setting.<\/p>\n

While we will know how the future of the MCU shakes out after\u00a0Endgame<\/em>, here’s hoping Marvel’s new slate of films makes room for Cheadle’s own franchise – or perhaps a new series on Disney+.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
