Following Fisher\u2019s sudden passing in December 2016, the question loomed large over how the final <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">films would utilize Fisher to ensure that justice would be done for the character she originated more than 40 years ago, Princess Leia. Now, we have a clearer idea of what Fisher\u2019s final performance will look like in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/star-wars-episode-ix\/249997\"><em>Star Wars: Episode IX<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thanks to new comments from director J.J. Abrams at the Star Wars Celebration panel in Chicago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a Friday afternoon panel moderated by top fanboy Stephen Colbert, the topic of what Fisher\u2019s final performance in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skywalker saga would look like. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/life\/movies\/2019\/04\/12\/live-star-wars-celebration-episode-ix-movie-panel\/3444222002\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abrams took the lead on answering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sharing that they \u201ccouldn\u2019t fill the void\u201d left by Fisher in any traditional way because she was \u201cglorious\u201d and that it would be \u201cimpossible.\u201d According to Abrams, this means that he, Kathleen Kennedy, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Episode IX <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scribe Chris Terrio, and the other producers immediately took the option off the table to create a CGI version of Fisher to perform in her place (unlike what happened with the late Peter Cushing, who was resurrected in CGI form to play Grand Moff Tarkin in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rogue One<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The workaround that Abrams and co. landed on was, miraculously, to use previously cut footage of Fisher from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Abrams, the idea to use the footage sprang from the notion of \u201cwhat if we could write scenes around her?\u201d and he went on to comment that \u201cthe crazy thing is, emotionally, every day it hits me that she\u2019s not here but it\u2019s surreal because we\u2019re working with her still [&#8230;] Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that\u2019s mindblowing to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">JJ said the idea of using CGI to recreate carrie fisher&#39;s likeness was off the table from the beginning and that they wrote the film around her unused scenes from TFA. he also said she&#39;ll share scenes with her daughter billie in IX.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; lindsey romain @ swcc (@lindseyromain) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lindseyromain\/status\/1116737113205170176?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 12, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on Abrams\u2019 comments, fans can expect to see \u2014 to an extent \u2014 the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Episode IX <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">script written around Fisher\u2019s re-purposed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Force Awakens <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scenes so that Leia\u2019s part of the film will mesh seamlessly with the overall story being told.
