This week, Disney\u2019s latest live-action remake managed to triumph over two other March heavy-hitters, so why doesn\u2019t it feel like a win?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week\u2019s Top Earner \u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dumbo&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tF8Z5_fb5qg?start=4&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1941, Disney\u2019s original animated film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dumbo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wasn\u2019t a huge hit by any means. It cost nearly $1 million to make and barely earned $1.6 million. Even by today\u2019s standards of inflation, that\u2019s not exactly impressive, especially considering the film coming out in the wake of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snow White<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s monstrous box office run just a few years earlier, reshaping cinema and animation forever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No such expectations have been thrust upon the 2019 version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dumbo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a live-action reimagining directed by Tim Burton, which collected $45 million in its opening weekend. To be fair, we might have expected a grander entrance considering Burton\u2019s involvement with the similarly styled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alice in Wonderland <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remake from 2010, which went on to make over a billion at the box office worldwide. Regardless, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dumbo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell below industry and studio projections, making less than half of what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alice in Wonderland <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jungle Book <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2016) earned in their respective opening weekends. For now, this elephant is flying pretty low to ground.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Place \u00a0\u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Us&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OqGNWB3ceSs?start=15&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Percentage-wise, Universal\u2019s horror hit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Us <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped more than any other film this weekend in the Top 10, but it still managed to drop only one spot on the list to #2, holding on strong with a domestic take of $33.6 million in its second week. Worldwide, the film is looking scary good with $174.5 million off of a reported budget of just $20 million, already outpacing the momentum of Jordan Peele\u2019s last film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Third \u00a0\u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain Marvel&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IyE4K3msUEw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in its third week, Disney and Marvel\u2019s aptly named <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain Marvel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped fittingly to #3, earning $20.5 million domestically. The superhero film is a superhit worldwide, too, with $990.6 million, which means Disney is about to have another billion-dollar franchise on their hands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five Feet Apart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">held on to its #4 spot, dropping 26.9% after losing 21 theaters. It made $6.2 million domestically, bringing its worldwide total to a solid $50.6 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unplanned<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PureFlix) debuted this week and landed at #5, making $6.1 million in just over 1,059 theaters. The religious anti-choice film has a reported budget of $6 million, so it\u2019s already on its way to making a profit. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wonder Park <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Paramount) dropped 3 spots to #6 with $4.9 million domestically, still quite shy of its estimated budget of $80-100 million. And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Universal) fell 2 spots to #7 with a domestic take of $4.2 million in its 6th week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hote<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mumbai <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Bleecker Street) expanded its release this week, jumping to #8 after gaining 920 theaters and earning $3.1 million. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Perry\u2019s A Madea Family Funeral <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Lionsgate) fell 3 spots to #9 with $2.7 million domestic, signaling its upcoming exit from the Top 10 after a solid 5 weeks. And this week\u2019s third debut, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Beach Bum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Neon), just barely made the Top 10 in the last-place spot with $1.8 million domestic, despite playing in 1,100 theaters. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And They\u2019re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gloria Bell <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(A24) flirted with the Top 10 this week but ultimately dropped to #11 despite gaining theaters. Same goes for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No Manches Frida 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Pantelion), which dropped 5 spots to #12. After 8 weeks at the box office, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lego Movie 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Warner Bros.) finally bowed out of the Top 10, all but cementing a disappointing box office run of $183.3 million worldwide, well below every other \u201cLego\u201d film except for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lego Ninjago<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alita: Battle Angel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Fox), which fell 5 spots to #15 in its 7th week.
