Cruise (and therefore Paramount) has announced that the <em>Mission: Impossible<\/em> franchise will continue with <em>Mission: Impossible 7<\/em> and <em>Mission: Impossible 8<\/em> coming in back-to-back summers of 2021 and 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Summer 2021 and Summer 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/V6SNvZx2La\">pic.twitter.com\/V6SNvZx2La<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tom Cruise (@TomCruise) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCruise\/status\/1084964387335618560?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 15, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Even better? Director Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed the last two excellent installments (and gave us the forever gift and GIF of a mustachioed Henry Cavill reloading his bicep guns), is back on board to direct both. <em>Mission: Impossible &#8211; Fallout<\/em> grossed almost a cool $800 million at the global box office, pulling in $100 million more than the previous <em>M<\/em>:<em>I<\/em>\u00a0flick, <em>Mission: Impossible &#8211; Rogue Nation<\/em>, and proving that McQuarrie and Cruise make some awesomely action-packed magic together.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, it&#8217;s a race to see which franchise heads to space first: <em>Mission: Impossible<\/em> or <em>Fast &amp; Furious<\/em>. My bet&#8217;s on Tom Cruise &#8211; I mean, at this point, he&#8217;s probably going to BASE jump from the International Space Station. Or hitch a ride on an actual rocket heading into space. Hah!<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;Okay, but seriously, this is where we&#8217;re heading, right? This is the guy, after all, who broke his ankle so badly when filming <em>Fallout<\/em> that doctors told him he might never run again and six weeks later he was back to sprinting full speed on set. Cruise is an adrenaline junkie with a work ethic that is unparalleled in Hollywood, and McQuarrie is arguably the best director working in compelling action today. But, considering their romantic storyline just got started, we can hazard a guess that Rebecca Ferguson&#8217;s Ilsa Faust will definitely return to complement Cruise&#8217;s Ethan Hunt. And it&#8217;s likely that Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) will be back to round out the team. Might we even see the return of Jeremy Renner&#8217;s William Brandt? It&#8217;s entirely possible.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, I&#8217;m excited to see what McQuarrie and Cruise have in store for us. Cruise tends to be picky about his projects (we&#8217;ll just pretend <em>The Mummy<\/em> never happened), and he and McQuarrie have an implicit trust in one another. Considering McQuarrie was being heavily courted by a number of studios after <em>Fallout<\/em> and ultimately chose to reteam with Cruise, it really says something about how comfortable the pair is working together.
