This week, only one major studio release hit theaters, but it was more than enough to make a dent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week\u2019s Top Earner \u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain Marvel&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As expected, Disney and Marvel\u2019s latest superhero origin film blew the box office wide open with a huge $153 million domestic haul. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/captain-marvel\/198440\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain Marvel <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was also a major hit overseas, debuting with $89 million in China, the third highest opening there behind only <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain America: Civil War <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avengers: Infinity War<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At $455 million worldwide, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain Marvel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just had the 6th biggest opening weekend ever. Higher, further, faster, indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Place \u00a0\u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest DreamWorks Animation film got its wings clipped after <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/box-office-insider-greta-madea-how-to-train-your-dragon-3\/\">two straight weeks at #1<\/a>, this time dropping 51% with just $14.6 million at the domestic box office. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/how-to-train-your-dragon-the-hidden-world\/142144\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hidden World <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is still proving to be a profitable win for Universal with $435.1 million worldwide, but it\u2019s still hard to tell whether or not it can catch up to the previous <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Train Your Dragon <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">film, so we\u2019ll keep reporting as this particularly busy March flies by.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Third \u00a0\u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tyler Perry\u2019s A Madea Family Funeral&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lionsgate kept <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/tyler-perrys-a-madea-family-funeral\/253216\"><em>A Madea<\/em><\/a><\/span><em>\u00a0Family Funeral<\/em>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in over 2,400 theaters this weekend, allowing the film to maintain its hold on the Top 3 as it dropped only one spot. It made $12 million domestic, and almost all of the film\u2019s $46.1 million worldwide total was collected in the U.S. So with a reported budget of $20 million, it\u2019s looking like Tyler Perry can sing \u201cHallelujer\u201d once again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in its 5th week, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-lego-movie-2-the-second-part\/209281\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lego Movie 2<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held on to its #4 spot with $3.8 million at the box office. That, of course, puts it over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/alita-battle-angel\/233304\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alita: Battle Angel<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which finished at just $3.2 million in its fourth week despite a loud, but apparently impotent effort to drive viewers to see this one instead of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Captain Marvel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Battle Angel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winds down its big returns overseas, it\u2019s looking like any decision to carry on with a franchise won\u2019t be an easy gamble for Fox (and Disney?).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/green-book\/273307\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made a u-turn for the Top 10 last week, but the Universal film didn\u2019t see any movement this week as it braked at #6 once again, despite dropping 46% and making $2.4 million domestically in its 17th week. Same goes for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/isnt-it-romantic\/250460\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isn\u2019t It Romantic<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Warner Bros, which stayed at #7 and came within $78,000 of beating <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, despite losing over 1,000 theaters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/fighting-with-my-family\/245910\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fighting with My Family <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped three spots to #8, making just $2.1 million for MGM. The wrestling comedy has only brought in $18.6 million in the U.S. after a month at the box office, but it also hasn\u2019t debuted in any other markets to soothe its black eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/greta\/278263\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greta <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell one spot to #9 despite gaining a few theaters and only being in its second week. The Focus Features film made $2.1 million, just $27,000 shy of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fighting with My Family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and now sits at $9 million worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/apollo-11\/280096\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apollo 11 <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rocketed up 5 spots to #10 this week thanks to expanded IMAX screenings and positive word-of-mouth from viewers and critics.
