Each week on <\/span>Atom Insider<\/span>, we break down the box office numbers for all of the biggest films opening in theaters. This week, only one major studio release hit theaters, but it was more than enough to make a dent.<\/span><\/p>\n

This Week\u2019s Top Earner \u2013 ‘<\/span>Captain Marvel’<\/span><\/h2>\n

As expected, Disney and Marvel\u2019s latest superhero origin film blew the box office wide open with a huge $153 million domestic haul. <\/span>Captain Marvel <\/span><\/i><\/a>was also a major hit overseas, debuting with $89 million in China, the third highest opening there behind only <\/span>Captain America: Civil War <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Avengers: Infinity War<\/span><\/i>. At $455 million worldwide, <\/span>Captain Marvel <\/span><\/i>just had the 6th biggest opening weekend ever. Higher, further, faster, indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Second Place \u00a0\u2013 ‘<\/span>How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’<\/span><\/h2>\n

The latest DreamWorks Animation film got its wings clipped after two straight weeks at #1<\/a>, this time dropping 51% with just $14.6 million at the domestic box office. <\/span>The Hidden World <\/span><\/i><\/a>is still proving to be a profitable win for Universal with $435.1 million worldwide, but it\u2019s still hard to tell whether or not it can catch up to the previous <\/span>How to Train Your Dragon <\/span><\/i>film, so we\u2019ll keep reporting as this particularly busy March flies by.<\/span><\/p>\n

And Third \u00a0\u2013 ‘<\/span>Tyler Perry\u2019s A Madea Family Funeral’<\/span><\/h2>\n

Lionsgate kept A Madea<\/em><\/a><\/span>\u00a0Family Funeral<\/em>\u00a0in over 2,400 theaters this weekend, allowing the film to maintain its hold on the Top 3 as it dropped only one spot. It made $12 million domestic, and almost all of the film\u2019s $46.1 million worldwide total was collected in the U.S. So with a reported budget of $20 million, it\u2019s looking like Tyler Perry can sing \u201cHallelujer\u201d once again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n

Now in its 5th week, <\/span>The Lego Movie 2<\/span><\/i><\/a> held on to its #4 spot with $3.8 million at the box office. That, of course, puts it over <\/span>Alita: Battle Angel<\/span><\/i><\/a>, which finished at just $3.2 million in its fourth week despite a loud, but apparently impotent effort to drive viewers to see this one instead of <\/span>Captain Marvel<\/span><\/i>. As <\/span>Battle Angel <\/span><\/i>winds down its big returns overseas, it\u2019s looking like any decision to carry on with a franchise won\u2019t be an easy gamble for Fox (and Disney?).<\/span><\/p>\n

Green Book <\/span><\/i><\/a>made a u-turn for the Top 10 last week, but the Universal film didn\u2019t see any movement this week as it braked at #6 once again, despite dropping 46% and making $2.4 million domestically in its 17th week. Same goes for <\/span>Isn\u2019t It Romantic<\/span><\/i><\/a> from Warner Bros, which stayed at #7 and came within $78,000 of beating <\/span>Green Book<\/span><\/i>, despite losing over 1,000 theaters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fighting with My Family <\/span><\/i><\/a>dropped three spots to #8, making just $2.1 million for MGM. The wrestling comedy has only brought in $18.6 million in the U.S. after a month at the box office, but it also hasn\u2019t debuted in any other markets to soothe its black eye.<\/span><\/p>\n

Greta <\/span><\/i><\/a>fell one spot to #9 despite gaining a few theaters and only being in its second week. The Focus Features film made $2.1 million, just $27,000 shy of <\/span>Fighting with My Family<\/span><\/i>, and now sits at $9 million worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apollo 11 <\/span><\/i><\/a>rocketed up 5 spots to #10 this week thanks to expanded IMAX screenings and positive word-of-mouth from viewers and critics. The space mission documentary from CNN Films made $1.3 million this weekend in just 405 theaters.<\/span><\/p>\n

And They’re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n

Despite only one new release hitting the Top 10 (<\/span>The Kid <\/span><\/i>barely made the Top 20 and <\/span>Gloria Bell <\/span><\/i>the Top 30), two films fell out of the leaderboards. <\/span>What Men Want <\/span><\/i><\/a>dropped two spots to #11 and <\/span>Happy Death Day 2U<\/span><\/i><\/a> fell to #13 behind <\/span>The Upside<\/span><\/i><\/a> at #12. <\/span><\/p>\n
