This week sees the arrival of 2019\u2019s first big weekend, now with DreamWorks Animation leading the pack.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week\u2019s Top Earner \u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MJtPKyuUHsE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DreamWorks Animation\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Train Your Dragon <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">series has been distributed by three different studios since the first film came out in 2010, but Universal now enjoys the franchise\u2019s best opening weekend with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/how-to-train-your-dragon-the-hidden-world\/142144\"><em>How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World<\/em><\/a>. The high-flying animated trilogy capper brought in $55.5 million domestically, and worldwide it\u2019s already made $274.9 million thanks to an early release in other markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hidden World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is already the #3 highest-grossing film of 2019, behind <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wandering Earth <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crazy Alien<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (both are Chinese films). Despite this series reaching a fitting conclusion story-wise, it won\u2019t be surprising if DreamWorks and Universal decide to pull a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toy Story 4 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">down the road to make the most of this success.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Place \u00a0\u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alita: Battle Angel&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E4Fal4EnOqo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not a ton of great news for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alita <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this week, at least in the states. Though the film gained a net of 12 theaters, it still dropped 57% and made only $12 million domestically. If not for its huge debut in China ($62.2 million), we\u2019d have to consider <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/alita-battle-angel\/233304\">Alita: Battle Angel<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a potential disaster for Fox, but the film is performing well overseas with a total of $263.3 million in its second week (making it the #4 film of 2019). At this point, we can reasonably assume the film will at least make some profit depending on the size of the marketing budget. But even if it only breaks even, signs point to a new franchise that might be less expensive to produce moving forward.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Third \u00a0\u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LEGO Movie: The Second Part&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xSz4xnQlEAY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warner Bros.\u2019 animated sequel performed just slightly under <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alita<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dropping 51% with $10 million domestic in its third weekend. And that\u2019s despite losing nearly 500 theaters. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At $136.6 million worldwide, it\u2019s looking like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-lego-movie-2-the-second-part\/209281\"><em>The LEGO Movie:\u00a0<\/em><\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Second Part <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may finish its box office run just below of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEGO Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 2017, and far from where the first of these films landed in 2014. If you discount <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEGO Ninjago<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s clear this franchise is trending downward in a big way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/the-lego-movie-2-review\/\">Read our review of <em>The LEGO Movie: The Second Part<\/em>.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new MGM film <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/fighting-with-my-family\/245910\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fighting with My Family <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanded to wide release this week, so it jumped from #41 to #4 practically overnight. Thanks to a low reported budget of $11 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/exclusive-dwayne-johnson-stephen-merchant-interview-fighting-with-my-family\/\">the heartfelt sports dramedy from Dwayne Johnson and Stephen Merchant<\/a> is already on its way to becoming a modest hit with $8 million domestic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/isnt-it-romantic\/250460\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isn\u2019t It Romantic <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped two spots to #5 this week, collecting just $7.5 million domestically in its post-Valentine\u2019s weekend run. It\u2019s now made $33.7 million in the U.S., surpassing its reported budget of $31 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/what-men-want\/261967\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Men Want <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped two spots to #6 with $5.2 million domestically. Now in its third weekend, the romantic comedy has made $49.6 million off of an even lower reported budget of $20 million. The rom-com isn\u2019t the massive moneymaker it used to be, but clearly, there\u2019s still an appetite for these films early in the year (You can read our review <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/what-men-want-review\/\">here<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/happy-death-day-2u\/279939\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy Death Day 2U<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gained some theaters in its second week, but that wasn\u2019t enough to keep the film from dropping two spots to #7. The slasher\/sci-fi sequel only brought in $4.9 million domestically, but it\u2019s still a bonafide hit with $42.5 million worldwide off of a low $9 million budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You guessed it. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/cold-pursuit\/277644\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold Pursuit <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also dropped two spots to #8, making just $3.3 million in its third week. As we mentioned last week, this one might turn out to be a flop for Lionsgate with only $35.5 million worldwide off of an estimated budget of $60 million. The phrase \u201cno such thing as bad press\u201d doesn\u2019t seem to apply this time. (Read our review <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/cold-pursuit-review\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-upside\/252727\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upside <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also dropped two spots, now at #9. The STX film has enjoyed seven weeks on the Top 10, but it\u2019s finally winding down with a worldwide total of $110.5 million off of a reported budget of $37.5 million. Not bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last, we have a surprise for #10. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/run-the-race\/282023\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run the Race <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Roadside Attractions pulled off a $2.2 million domestic take this weekend, despite debuting in only 853 theaters with mixed-to-negative reviews and a lack of any big names attached to the cast.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And They&#8217;re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like last week, three films fell off the Top 10. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/green-book\/273307\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(which just won Best Picture at the Academy Awards) dropped one spot to #11. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/glass\/240900\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped five spots to #12. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-prodigy\/276341\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prodigy <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped four spots to #13.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check back with Atom Insider later this week as we preview all the new releases hitting theaters this Friday.
