This week, a new animated sequel opens big\u2014but not that big\u2014and a romantic comedy beats out a cold thriller.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week&#8217;s Top Earner \u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FVskK_95Q_w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The year is young, but Warner Bros. has finally cracked the Top 10 global box office of 2019 with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-lego-movie-2-the-second-part\/209281\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (give them a break, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquaman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been cleaning house since December). The animated sequel to the 2014 surprise hit opened with $34.4 million domestically, plus another $18.1 million overseas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We expected <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEGO Movie 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to dethrone <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this weekend, and it did, but it\u2019s not all good news. The first LEGO movie made double this domestic amount in its opening weekend, and each LEGO movie in the last five years has made less than the one before (although this sequel opened bigger than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LEGO Ninjago <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2017). It\u2019s looking like audiences aren\u2019t convinced \u201cevery movie is awesome\u201d when it comes to this franchise. The film is getting strong reviews (like ours, which you can read here), however, and Warner Bros. has a couple of weeks to make up some ground on its $100 million budget before the next animated family film roars into theaters \u2013 and, for that matter, Marvel&#8217;s <em>Captain Marvel,<\/em> set to hit theaters less than a month from now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/the-lego-movie-2-review\/\">Read Atom Insider&#8217;s review of <em>The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part<\/em>.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Place \u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Men Want&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HeoLiTirRp4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paramount clearly got into our heads this weekend with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/what-men-want\/261967\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Men Want<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which grabbed the #2 spot with $19 million domestically, just under its reported budget of $20 million. Who says romantic comedies are dead?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be fair, this is nowhere near the heights of the film\u2019s predecessor <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Women Want<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which opened in 2000 to $33 million domestically, which doesn\u2019t even count inflation. But considering its heavy competition from several star-studded films, it\u2019s clear audiences were down for a fun comedy with Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/what-men-want-review\/\"><strong>Read Atom Insider&#8217;s review of <em>What Men Want<\/em>.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Third \u2013 &#8216;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold Pursuit&#8217;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0phuNQQ_gHI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Audiences didn\u2019t exactly hunt this one down. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/cold-pursuit\/277644\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold Pursuit <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opened with just $10.8 million domestically this weekend, marking the weakest debut for a Liam Neeson film since before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is in spite of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold Pursuit <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">receiving some of the best reviews Neeson\u2019s brand of revenge thriller has gotten since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and we can point to several possible reasons ranging from Neeson\u2019s press tour admission of past racism and subsequent cancellation of the movie&#8217;s premiere to the fact that his last few films have been extremely hit or miss with fans and critics alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/cold-pursuit-review\/\">Read Atom Insider&#8217;s review of <em>Cold Pursuit<\/em>.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a surprise. Looks like Universal\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/glass\/240900\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dipped more than STX\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upside <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this week. Both films fell from their top spots, of course, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-upside\/252727\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upside <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managed to drop less and land at #3 for the weekend with $7.2 million domestically. This is likely because it lost fewer theaters than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which made $6.4 million. Regardless, both films are nearing the end of their runs with great box office totals, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially thanks to a robust performance overseas. It\u2019s now at $221.4 million worldwide, just $56 million shy of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Split<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-prodigy\/276341\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Prodigy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> performed about as well as Orion might have hoped, opening at #5 with $6 million domestic, already reaching the horror film\u2019s low budget of, you guessed it, $6 million. Reviews have been mixed and February is a crowded month for all sorts of genre movies, so it\u2019s doubtful <em>The<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prodigy <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be much of a hit going forward, but it could make enough back in the next few weeks to eke out a modest gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal\u2019s other Top 10 film for the box office is still <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/green-book\/273307\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which dropped a spot to #7 in its 13th week. The film brought in $3.5 million despite losing 500 theaters. It\u2019ll debut in China and Japan next month, but regardless of how it does in those markets, the film is a solid hit at $106 million worldwide off of a reported $23 million budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/aquaman\/197405\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquaman <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped a few spots this week to #8, but it\u2019s still holding strong in its 8th week with $3.3 million. It lost over 700 theaters, but its lead as the highest-grossing DC film ever at $1.1 billion worldwide is more than secure for now. The film will likely stay as the #5 film of 2018 in terms of total box office for the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another superhero flick dropped four spots, and that\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse\/263659\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, now at #9 in its 9th week. The film brought in $3 million domestically, just narrowly missing a chance to beat <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquaman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> despite still playing in more theaters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, we have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/miss-bala\/267872\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Bala<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which despite not losing or gaining any theaters this week actually dropped 7 spots to #10. Ouch. The film dropped 60%, making only $2.7 million and will almost certainly fall off the Top 10 by next week. With a reported budget of just $15 million, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Bala <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be able to come close to breaking even, but it likely won\u2019t be profitable for Sony unless it overperforms internationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And They&#8217;re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As expected, a lot of films fell off the Top 10 this week. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-kid-who-would-be-king\/249926\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kid Who Would Be King <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plummeted to #15 after a disappointing opening weekend despite getting rave reviews, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/a-dogs-way-home\/267871\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Dog\u2019s Way Home <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slid less dramatically to #11 \u2013 same for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/escape-room\/272168\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escape Room <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which fell to #14 \u2013 and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/they-shall-not-grow-old\/283232\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They Shall Not Grow Old <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at #13 (despite gaining theaters). The latter three films are in decent shape overall, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kid Who Would Be King <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is shaping up to be a real disaster for Fox, bringing in just $1.5 million in only its 3rd week.
