This week, only one wide release came our way, and it wasn\u2019t enough to overthrow last weekend\u2019s Top 2, which continue to hold steady. It was also a slower weekend at the box office, thanks in part there only being one new wide release and large portions of the country being in the grip of a polar vortex and the West Coast being hammered by rain and flooding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>This Week&#8217;s Top Earner (For The Third Week In A Row) \u2013 &#8216;Glass&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K3UB6ZBPY9Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/glass\/240900\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is on top once again, but this may be its final week at #1 with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-lego-movie-2-the-second-part\/209281\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lego Movie 2 <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/cold-pursuit\/277644\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold Pursuit <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kicking off February in earnest later this week. Regardless, the film made just $9.5 million this weekend, which is a 49% drop. Interestingly, that\u2019s not as bad a drop as last week, which shows audiences didn\u2019t really consider other alternatives when heading to the theater this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In just its third week, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/box-office-insider-glass-the-upside-and-aquaman-hold-their-ground\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has made an impressive $88.6 million domestically for a worldwide total of $198.9 million. Depending on how the rest of the month\u2019s box office fares, it\u2019s looking more likely than ever that the film will catch up <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/all-the-connections-and-easter-eggs-so-far-in-glass-unbreakable-and-split\/\">to its predecessor <\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Split<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or maybe even surpass it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Second Place (For The Second Week In A Row) &#8211; &#8216;The Upside&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ggG-UqENu4Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite some new competition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-upside\/252727\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upside <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">held tight to its #2 spot, likely because STX once again expanded its theatrical release to 191 more theaters. Still, it dropped 25% (more than last week) and continues to underperform overseas. With $8.8 million brought in domestically, it\u2019s now at a comfortable $81.6 million worldwide in its fourth week.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>And Third &#8211; &#8216;Miss Bala&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PS2mVY3sb9o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not exactly a triumphant entry for the new Sony film, with just $6.7 million domestically. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/miss-bala\/267872\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Bala <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a reported budget of $15 million, so it doesn\u2019t have as steep a hill to climb as some of the other winter releases of late. And to the film\u2019s credit, it surpassed Sony\u2019s low expectations of just $5 million for the weekend (it later upped its projection to $6.1 million), so, all in all, we can be cautiously optimistic about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reviews haven\u2019t been kind to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Bala<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it may rebound fairly well from its international release, which will stretch through March. With bigger films coming around in the next few weeks, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Bala <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may struggle to hang on to the Top 10, so we\u2019ll have to wait and see.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More good news for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/aquaman\/197405\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquaman<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which only dropped one spot to #4 in its seventh week with $4.7 million, despite losing over 200 theaters. At $1.1 billion worldwide and amidst the news that <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/dceu-news-roundup-ben-affleck-is-out-james-gunn-is-in\/\">Ben Affleck is out as Batman<\/a>, Warner Bros. is likely feeling a strong new wind for a cinematic universe that seemed in peril after 2017\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justice League<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the second week in a row, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse\/263659\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stuck to #5 with $4.4 million, despite losing theaters and dropping a bit more this week. At $347.2 million worldwide and $175.2 million domestic, it\u2019s now Sony\u2019s most successful animated film in North America.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/green-book\/273307\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also hung on to the same spot as last week with #6, bringing in $4.3 million thanks to an expansion of another 200 theaters. The Universal film is now in its 12th week with a global total of $81.3 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We finally get to Fox\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-kid-who-would-be-king\/249926\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kid Who Would Be King<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which dropped three spots to #7 in just its second week. It brought in only $4.2 million domestically and its worldwide total is just $16.7 million, far below its reported budget of $59 million. It will almost certainly be a flop unless it miraculously overperforms internationally in the next month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/a-dogs-way-home\/267871\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Dog\u2019s Way Home <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped another spot and is now at #8, making just $3.5 million. It\u2019s now at $50.9 million worldwide and steadily declining. It\u2019s doing fine thanks to a low reported budget of $18 million, but this is a far cry from its predecessor <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Dog\u2019s Purpose<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which finished its run at $205 million. It should be mentioned, of course, that Universal distributed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Dog\u2019s Purpose <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and Sony handled this new film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/escape-room\/272168\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escape Room <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">held on to #9, thanks mostly to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serenity <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falling all the way down to #14. Now in its fifth week, Sony\u2019s early January surprise hit is nearing $100 million worldwide off of a reported $9 million budget. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this week\u2019s biggest surprise has to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/they-shall-not-grow-old\/283232\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They Shall Not Grow Old<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which debuted at #10 with $2.4 million despite being in only 735 theaters. Warner Bros. can and should expand Peter Jackson\u2019s WWI documentary to more theaters in the coming weeks, as it\u2019s already brought in $10.7 million domestically from this initial release and prior Fathom events.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two films dropped off the Top 10 this week. First, Aviron\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/serenity\/266599\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serenity<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is now at #14 in its second week with $7.5 million total. Not great. And second, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/mary-poppins-returns\/233820\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Poppins Returns<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which dropped to #11 and is starting to wrap up its impressive 7-week run.
