This week, death and violence abound in an action thriller, a survival thriller, and even a horror thriller.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gina Rodriguez Is The New \u2018Miss Bala\u2019<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e-kPf-n4Mto?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, Gerardo Naranjo&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/miss-bala\/267872\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Bala <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opened to universal acclaim, and we now have an American remake from Sony\/Columbia with Gina Rodriguez (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annihilation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smallfoot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the titular role. Translated as Miss \u201cBullet,\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss Bala <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follows the tale of an American makeup artist who gets caught up in a crime war between the Mexican drug cartel and the DEA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thirteen<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lords of Dogtown<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miss You Already<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, this one looks like a high-octane action thriller with a few surprises along the way. The cast also includes Anthony Mackie, Ismael Cruz C\u00f3rdova, Aislinn Derbez, Matt Lauria, and Thomas Dekker.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mads Mikkelsen Gives Death The Cold Shoulder In &#8216;Arctic&#8217;<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/N5aD9ppoQIo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleecker Street Films releases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/arctic\/270718\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arctic <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this weekend in select theaters, and early positive reviews from last year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival make the case for audiences to see this survival thriller when they can. Mads Mikkelsen stars as Overg\u00e5rd, a man who is stranded in the Arctic after a plane crash. What follows is a struggle to survive some of the most inhospitable conditions on Earth while making his way back to civilization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the first feature-length film from Joe Penna, a Brazilian musician and filmmaker known for the YouTube channel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MysteryGuitarMan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also co-wrote the film with Ryan Morrison. This looks like a brutal yet satisfying experience in a setting many films don\u2019t usually come close to exploring.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Abbott And Mia Wasikowska Go For The Kill In &#8216;Piercing&#8217;<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7pj5u4r_eSE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal\u2019s new indie horror thriller <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/piercing\/263854\">Piercing<\/a> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is finally creeping its way into select theaters after premiering at Sundance and several other film festivals last year. Christopher Abbott plays a prostitute-killer who sets his wicked sights on Jackie (Mia Wasikowska), who proves to be far more troublesome than he expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Piercing <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was directed by Nicolas Pesce (his second film after 2016\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eyes of My Mother<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). He also wrote the screenplay, an adaptation of Ry\u00fb Murakami&#8217;s novel of the same name. This could definitely be a sleeper horror hit considering the high praise coming out of the festival circuit, as well as a strong sophomore effort from Pesce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay tuned next week for our box office recap of how these movies fared at the box office.
