This week, two high-concept genre films struggled to find an audience, as superhero films once again dominated the top of the box office.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>This Week\u2019s Top Earner (For The Second Week In A Row) &#8211; &#8216;Glass&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K3UB6ZBPY9Y?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/glass\/240900\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is proving to be a bona fide hit despite a low budget of $20 million and negative reviews. In its second week, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">held on to the #1 spot for domestic box office with a take of $19 million. That\u2019s a 52.8% drop from last week despite adding three theaters. But thanks to an impressive gain of $23 million overseas, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glass <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is easily catching up to the success of its predecessor <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Split<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a worldwide total of $162.6 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This once again proves that word of mouth (and key reviews from prominent critics) can defy consensus and aggregate scores, especially when audiences <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/glass-fan-theories\/\">consider a film interesting <\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s polarizing, not just because it\u2019s been declared \u201cgood\u201d universally. With three back-to-back box office hits, Shyamalan is no doubt back in the good graces of studios looking to finance his next project for this very reason.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Second Place \u2013 &#8216;The Upside&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once again, STX added more theaters for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-upside\/252727\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upside<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has paid off well for them with a hold on the #2 spot and a solid $12.2 million domestically for the weekend. At $69.2 million worldwide, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upside<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is already STX\u2019s third highest-grossing film ever.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, the film isn\u2019t doing quite as well overseas. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Upside <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only brought in $1.1 million this past weekend in 38 markets. The film might pick up steam over the next few weeks, but at this point, its strong domestic run should be more than enough to bring in a profit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>And\u00a0Third \u2013 &#8216;Aquaman&#8217;<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_3757\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3757\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3757\" src=\"http:\/\/blog-proxy.atomtickets.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/aquaman-water-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"Jason Momoa as Aquaman\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/aquaman-water-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/aquaman-water-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/aquaman-water-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/aquaman-water-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/aquaman-water-400x250.jpg 400w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/aquaman-water.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jason Momoa as Aquaman<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/box-office-insider-glass\/\">we expected last week<\/a>, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/aquaman\/197405\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquaman <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is now officially the most financially successful DC film ever, surpassing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dark Knight Rises<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s now made $1.09 billion worldwide and $316.5 million domestically after six weeks. It\u2019s also managed to maintain the #3 spot despite competition from a family-friendly fantasy movie with great reviews. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film brought in $7.3 million domestically this weekend, just narrowly beating out <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kid Who Would be King <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">($7.2 million). That\u2019s only a 27% drop despite the film losing 341 theaters. Jason Momoa is now truly the \u201cking\u201d of the DC films.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fox\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-kid-who-would-be-king\/249926\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Kid Who Would Be King<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the latest film from Joe Cornish (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attack the Block<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) opened at #4 this week despite strong reviews from critics and good word of mouth. The reported budget is $59 million, so at only $10.4 million worldwide so far, the film will need a stronger showing in the UK next month to make up ground. Still, with those strong reviews and positive buzz, it could have legs that will carry it into February and help break even.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After dropping a spot last week, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse\/263659\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managed to keep swinging at #5 this past weekend. And that\u2019s after losing 329 theaters. It brought in $6.1 million (an 18% drop) in the U.S., pushing its global box office to $338.1 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We mentioned last week that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/green-book\/273307\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slowly climbed the rankings thanks to awards buzz, and that momentum has sped up big time. Universal added 1,518 theaters to the &#8217;60s-set dramedy, and the film has now made it to #6 in its 11th week at the box office. It made $5.4 million domestically, which means it\u2019s the only Best Picture contender for the Oscars in the Top 10 right now. The film has so far made $59.3 million worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/a-dogs-way-home\/267871\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Dog\u2019s Way Home <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped one spot to #7 this week after bringing in $5.2 million, a worse decline in both respects than last week, to be sure. It\u2019s now made $41.3 million worldwide off of its $18 million budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/serenity\/266599\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serenity<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which opened this week at #8 despite a recognizable cast and acclaimed director. Despite some polarized curiosity surrounding this film\u2019s perceived \u201cso bad it\u2019s good\u201d concept from some critics and audiences, it only made $4.8 million domestically in over 2,500 theaters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/escape-room\/272168\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Escape Room <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dropped two spots this week to #9, signaling its inevitable, graceful exit from the Top 10 in its fourth week with $4.2 million. And despite debuting at #4 last week, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dragon Ball Super: Broly <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell all the way to #10 with just $3.6 million (a 63% drop) after losing 133 theaters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/mary-poppins-returns\/233820\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Poppins Returns<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/bumblebee\/254984\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bumblebee<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/on-the-basis-of-sex\/265206\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Basis of Sex <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell off the Top 10 this week. In fact, the only awards contender climbing in the Top 20 right now (besides <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green Book<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Favourite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which added over 1,000 theaters and made $2.5 million this weekend. That brought it up 5 spots from last week to #13. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bohemian Rhapsody <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vice <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added theaters as well, but they both dropped at least one spot. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Star is Born <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refreshed its run with 777 more theaters, but it stayed put at #20. And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Beale Street Could Talk <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually lost 412 theaters, but it only dropped three spots to #19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check back with Atom Insider later this week as we preview all the new releases hitting theaters this Friday.
