Hard confirm. This is supposedly the same trailer that debuted at CCXP in Brazil a few months ago, and now the rest of the world finally gets to see.

But if you’re not a hardcore comic book fan or you’ve only gotten to watch the trailer once so far (you poor, poor people), have no fear. I’m here to help. Let’s break it down, shall we, and explore all the Easter Eggs, clues, and themes in Spidey’s new spot.

(P.S. No worries – I’m putting all the spoilery bits at the bottom.)

Aunt May Is Totally Cool With The Spider-Man Thing

At the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel smartly went and broke one of its own fundamental rules regarding Spider-Man: Aunt May found out about his secret life as a webslinger. While the MCU version of Aunt May is a bit of a worrywart (and who can blame her), she appears to be completely in Peter’s corner, supporting him both emotionally and with her presence. This is a far more engaged, aware version of Aunt May than we’ve ever seen. That will make two Spider-Man movies in a row with Far from Home and Into the Spider-Verse featuring Aunt Mays who are not only aware of their nephews’ secret identities as Spider-Men, but are actively involved.

There Are Sparks Between Aunt May And Happy Hogan

Looks like it won’t just be Peter forming a love connection this time around, either. Once again, Jon Favreau’s deadpan delivery as Happy Hogan serves him well in a scene in where he tries to awkwardly flirt with Aunt May. It weirds Peter out, it weirds Happy out to weird Peter out, and, as usual, Aunt May is the only one completely unruffled by the awkwardness. As we saw with Homecoming, Aunt May owns her hotness and is totally comfortable with men flirting with her. Will Happy and May develop into an actual romance? Only time will tell. There’s not a precedent for it in the comics, but thus far the MCU has done everything differently with their version of Spider-Man. Either way, I look forward to seeing Peter’s increasingly horrified expressions.

Real-World Product Placement – Drink!

I noticed that the word “Synchrony” printed on the check gets a nice big shot in the above scene and, failing to remember any bank or corporation named Synchrony in the comics, I did a little digging. Turns out Synchrony is the bank that issues the Marvel Mastercard credit card. So there you go. Strategic product placement.

Peter Parker’s Birthday Is A Comic Book Easter Egg

Peter Parker’s passport (Credit: Sony Pictures)

In the comics, Peter’s birthday is somewhere in September or October – he’s a Libra, as he reveals in Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 4 1. In the MCU, however, a shot of his passport reveals his birthday to be August 10, which is, in a nice little Easter Egg, the same day that Amazing Fantasy #15 and Spider-Man himself debuted in the world in 1962.

The Sweet Nod To Uncle Ben

Just as Peter is closing his suitcase, there’s a shot of the latch and you see initials carved: “BFP.” It’s an Uncle Ben Easter Egg. If you’re wondering what the “F” stands for, it’s almost certain it’s for “Franklin.” While Uncle Ben never had an official middle name in the comics, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko modeled him after Benjamin Franklin, of all people. It just makes sense. It’s a sweet tribute to his late uncle that Peter Parker would carry his suitcase with him, the same way that he wore Uncle Ben’s old suit and tie to the dance in Homecoming.

Peter Gets A Blossoming Romance Of His Own

We knew it was likely to happen, but it looks like Peter and MJ are finally starting to get their non-standard comic book romance on. Bless Peter’s dorky little heart. He’s just as awkward and tongue-tied around MJ as he was around Liz in the previous movie. This time, however, he might actually have the chance to get the girl for good. Something tells me that if MJ hasn’t already figured out he’s Spider-Man like she does in the comics, then she will – and she’ll be totally cool with it.

The Quirky T-Shirt Theme Continues

In Homecoming, fun, nerdy t-shirts were a staple of Peter and Ned’s wardrobes. It looks like the boys will continue their strong t-shirt game into Far from Home, with both of them rocking some excellently quirky, nerdy shirts throughout the trailer. Baby Science Bros for life!

Nick Fury Really Likes Sitting In Shadows In The MCU

Nick Fury makes a Nick Fury-like entrance (Credit: Sony Pictures)

Much like he surprised the crap out of Steve Rogers in Captain America: The Winter Soldier by speaking to him from where he sat in the shadows of Steve’s apartment, Nick Fury finagles his way into Peter and Ned’s hostel room. If he’s not an LMD (Life-Model Decoy), then we know he survived the events of Avengers: Endgame. Which would be a spoiler but…c’mon. It’s Nick Fury. If anything, he is the one who would survive. He’s too wily to die – and if he did, he’d have had the foresight to make a dozen LMDs of himself first as a backup plan. And it makes sense that Fury would be keeping tabs on Peter. After all, he’ll need help reassembling the Avengers after the events of Endgame likely find some of them no longer with us.

Maria Hill Is Back!

Maria Hill, a.k.a. Nick Fury’s right hand, has been sorely underutilized to this point. But there is a shot that may or may not be her showing a woman shooting at a giant monster alongside Nick Fury. If it is Sandman, it means one more member of the Sinister Six has now been introduced to the MCU. At this point, it’s certain that that will be the plot for the third Spider-Man movie.

The Web Wings Get A Lot More Use In This Movie

When it was first revealed that Homecoming would feature Spider-Man’s OG classic web wings, fans were torn. On one hand, classic Spidey! On the other, how would you make that look good in live action? Not to fear, Marvel found a way. And though Spidey used them as gliders in one scene from the top of the Washington Monument, they weren’t put to much use in the first movie. Not so in this one. Peter Parker’s as much flying squirrel as spider in the sequel, with him utilizing his web wings more often and at much farther distances.

The MCU Introduces Its Version Of The Stealth Suit

Spider-Man rocks the stealth suit (Credit: Sony Pictures)

Peter leaves his suit behind on his trip to Europe, wanting to just be a kid and nothing more for a little while (although the international trailer revealed Aunt May sneaks it into his suitcase anyway). It’s the same crisis of responsibility we’ve seen every Spider-Man iteration go through; it’s part of his core canon. But Nick Fury was not having any part of this quitting business and came prepared with a new suit. Peter then gets a second suit in the trailer, one meant for stealth and modeled on Spider-Man Noir’s suit from the comics. We’ve seen concept art and leaked photos to this point, but it’s our first live look at the noir-styled stealth suit and it looks great.

Mysterio’s Costume Is Shockingly Comic-Book Accurate

Leave it to Marvel to figure out a way to make a guy who wears a fish bowl on his head to look, well, cool. Jake Gyllenhaal makes his debut into the MCU as Quentin Beck, a.k.a. Mysterio, and he looks fantastic. As one of Peter’s classmates points out, he’s like Thor and Iron Man rolled into one and somehow, all that extra works. Of all the costumes to veer away from you’d think it would have been Mysterio’s. But so far, Vulture is the costume design that has differed the most drastically in terms of Spider-Man villains.

And now, for the potential spoilers…

Is Mysterio Just Fooling Them All?

General audiences likely watched that trailer and thought, “Oh, another superhero to help Spider-Man? Great!” or at most thought that the storyline might be that of a rivalry between Mysterio and Spider-Man. Comic book fans, however, know that something is up and that something is likely that Mysterio is simply fooling everyone into believing he’s a hero. We know in the comics that Mysterio is an illusionist and a special effects wizard. It’s likely that he’s the one who is in cahoots with Hydron/Hydro-Man (the giant water guy) in the first place in order to “save” the city. It’s an old trope that’s been used before in comic book movies, but in Mysterio’s case, it would absolutely be comic book accurate.

That Toothpaste Is Going To Play A Crucial Role

Notice how often Peter’s toothpaste is mentioned in the trailer? There’s a deliberate shot of him grabbing it from the convenience store then he swings through the city with it. Aunt May asks if remembered to pack his toothpaste. And he’s standing there brushing his teeth when Nick Fury shows up; Peter keeps it in his hand the entire scene. My guess is that at some point, that toothpaste or toothbrush come in awfully handy. It would be so very on-brand for Peter Parker to defeat a tech and effects wiz with something as hilarious and dumb as a toothbrush. Just that typical Parker luck that breaks his way for once. For real.

Is there anything I missed? Anything you want to point out?
