This week, it was all about splashy, visual stunners with a few awards contenders and one last film from a Hollywood legend.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>This Week\u2019s Top Earner &#8211; &#8216;Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vav97pz346E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sony\u2019s animated superhero spinoff of the myriad <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">franchises received universal acclaim from critics and an A+ CinemaScore from audiences. But this early critical success wasn&#8217;t just in reviews; it translated into equally impressive box office numbers for an animated movie. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/spider-man-into-the-spider-verse\/263659\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">broke a record by accumulating <\/span>$35.4 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S., making it the biggest December opening for an animated film ever (Illumination\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sing <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">held that record for just two years). Its global take is also looking good, as it adds <\/span>$21 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 44 international markets, bringing its worldwide total to over $56 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can probably expect <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Into the Spider-Verse <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to have some legs in the weeks ahead thanks to great word-of-mouth and its stellar ratings, plus the film will open in even more countries pretty soon. That said, there are other blockbusters, including a highly-anticipated DC superhero film <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/aquaman-movie-review\/\">you may have heard about<\/a>, that will compete for attention and possibly slow down the film\u2019s momentum.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Second Place: &#8216;The Mule&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.atomtickets.com\/image\/upload\/h_960,q_auto\/v1544470862\/ingestion-images-archive-prod\/archive\/1544470862313_280188_cops_5.jpg\" width=\"1440\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clint Eastwood\u2019s last two films, <em>The 15:17 to Paris<\/em> and <em>Sully<\/em>, didn\u2019t quite live up to the financial success of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Sniper<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the director\u2019s biggest hit ever and the highest-grossing war film of all time. His newest film is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-mule\/280188\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mule<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and its opening weekend take of over <\/span>$17.2 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Warner Bros. is a bit better than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15:17 to Paris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0managed earlier this year. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mule <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also made about half the opening box office of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sully<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from two years ago. It&#8217;s also worth noting, however, that <em>The Mule<\/em> opened in a crowded holiday season whereas the other three opened during traditionally slower times at the theater, so all things considered, it&#8217;s doing solidly well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We won\u2019t get a broader picture of the film\u2019s international take until January, but for now, we can probably expect this one<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be a modest earner for the rest of the month thanks to fairly positive audience ratings and a mixed-to-positive response from critics. That $50 million production budget, however, will be a steep climb at this point. But Eastwood has proven he has a track record of films carving out a box office take over time. Will <em>The Mule<\/em> do the same? It&#8217;s a definite possibility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Stalling This Weekend: &#8216;Mortal Engines&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal\u2019s big-budget adaptation of the post-apocalyptic \u201croving city\u201d novel by Philip Reeve struggled to find an audience, earning just <\/span>$7.5 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Friday and Saturday in the U.S. The film has been playing in London since November 26, so <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/mortal-engines\/242647\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mortal Engines <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has already secured a total box office of over $42 million to date, but its reported budget is at least $100 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mortal Engines <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes in fifth place this weekend for domestic box office behind animated movies\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/dr-seuss-the-grinch\/180055\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Grinch <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(also from Universal)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/ralph-breaks-the-internet-wreck-it-ralph-2\/164750\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ralph Breaks the Internet<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which came out in November. This is the first feature-length film directed by Christian Rivers, who worked with director Peter Jackson on all three <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord of the Rings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> movies, as well as the entire<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hobbit <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">franchise. Universal used Jackson\u2019s pedigree in a lot of the marketing for this new film (which he produced and co-wrote with his partner, Fran Walsh), but it doesn\u2019t look like this will be the next big franchise-starter for Universal, perhaps due to mostly negative reviews and a tepid audience reaction from fans of the book.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Rounding Up The Rest Of The Box Office<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.atomtickets.com\/image\/upload\/h_960,q_auto\/v1532553208\/ingestion-images-archive-prod\/archive\/1532553208142_197405_cops_11.jpg\" width=\"1706\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fox put out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/once-upon-a-deadpool\/280561\"><i>Once Upon a Deadpool<\/i> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this past weekend, a PG-13 edit of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with some extra holiday-themed scenes featuring Fred Savage. It only made about <\/span>$2.6 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> domestically and <\/span>$1 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overseas, so it\u2019s looking like teens were already checking out the R-rated version with their parents, after all. Regardless, it&#8217;s all for a good cause as <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/once-upon-a-deadpool-nickelback-promo-trailer\/\">part of the proceeds went straight to the F*ck Cancer nonprofit organization<\/a>, so even a few million dollars is great news for do-gooding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internationally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/aquaman\/197405\"><i>Aquaman<\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been cleaning up for Warners Bros. The film doesn\u2019t officially open in the U.S. until next week, but it\u2019s already made over <\/span>$261 million<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> globally, thanks in large part to an impressive showing in China and an advanced screening date, courtesy of yours truly and Amazon, that hauled in a few million. In fact, the Thursday night advanced screening for <em>Aquaman<\/em> was so successful that it technically places tenth on the list for this past weekend&#8217;s box office take. Not too shabby for a single night&#8217;s haul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/if-beale-street-could-talk\/271598\"><i>If Beale Street Could Talk<\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opened in four locations this past weekend and has earned $219,174 for Annapurna Pictures. Its per-theater average is quite high at $54,794, and for context, the second highest per-theater average this week is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Queen of Scots <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at $10,606. By comparison, Barry Jenkins\u2019s last film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonlight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, managed an average of over $100,000 just two years ago, also in only four theaters &#8211; and that was on the way to winning an Oscar for Best Picture. Will <em>Beale Street<\/em> be in the Oscars conversation, as well?
