It&#8217;s a wild tale of love, war, and robots\u00a0\u2013 seriously.\u00a0But if its fast-paced trailers have you intrigued and a bit perplexed,\u00a0we&#8217;ve\u00a0got you covered. Here&#8217;s the lowdown on this high-tech adventure. \u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\u202f<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Is ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Based On?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/alita-battle-angel\/233304\"><em>Alita: Battle Angel<\/em> <\/a>is based on\u00a0Yukito\u00a0Kishiro&#8217;s\u00a0manga <em>Gunnm<\/em>, which in its native Japan translates loosely to &#8220;Gun Dream.&#8221; But the English\u00a0language version of the\u00a0Japanese comic is\u00a0titled <em>Battle Angel Alita<\/em>. This cyberpunk manga series ran from 1990 to\u202f1995\u00a0and\u00a0inspired a 1993 anime\u00a0with the title shortened to simply\u00a0<em>Battle Angel.<\/em> Around this stylish sci-fi franchise grew a passionate fan following that included Hollywood\u00a0helmer\u00a0James Cameron. The heralded director of <em>Titanic<\/em> and\u00a0the\u00a0<em>Terminator<\/em> franchise\u00a0dreamed of\u00a0one day\u00a0translating\u00a0Kishiro&#8217;s\u00a0vision into a live-action epic. In the late &#8217;90s, Cameron and his producing partner Jon Landau even traveled to Japan to secure the movie rights to <em>Gunnm<\/em> and to get\u00a0Kishiro&#8217;s\u00a0blessing for an American adaptation. However, Cameron feared that visual effects at the time wouldn&#8217;t be up to the task of building a world of fittingly stunning cyborgs, so\u00a0his dreams of Alita were put on hold.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, Cameron pushed CGI to new frontiers with the high-flying fantasy blockbuster AVATAR, a technical\u00a0spectacle in its own right. And finally, the time seemed right to dust off his long-shelved <em>Alita: Battle Angel<\/em>. By then, Cameron had\u00a0a 180-page script with 600 pages of notes.\u00a0However, as he\u00a0was and\u00a0is slated to make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/avatar-2\/203457\"><em>Avatar<\/em> sequels<\/a> into the next ice age\u00a0(seriously, for real this time, you guys), Cameron needed to find a filmmaker that he could trust to do his\u00a0vision\u00a0justice.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Enter writer-director Robert Rodriguez, who famously translated Frank Miller&#8217;s neo-noir <em>Sin City<\/em> comics into a pair of sick,\u00a0slick\u00a0movies. A fateful meeting between these two visionary auteurs sparked a\u00a0collaboration\u00a0with\u00a0their respective production companies, Lightstorm Entertainment and Troublemaker Studios. Cameron handed over his script and\u00a0directing duties\u00a0to\u202fRodriguez\u00a0but\u00a0stayed on as producer. Together,\u00a0the prolific duo\u00a0is\u00a0poised to bring to theaters one of the most\u00a0technically\u00a0ambitious sci-fi adventures\u00a0to date.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s With\u00a0Alita\u2019s\u00a0Big Eyes?<\/h2>\n<p>When the first trailer for <em>Alita: Battle Angel<\/em> dropped, those new to the\u202ffranchise\u202fwere left with this big question: Why does Alita have such weirdly huge eyes?\u00a0Turns out Cameron and Rodriguez did much more than\u202fembrace\u202fthe cyborg tech and cyberpunk aesthetic of\u00a0Kishiro&#8217;s\u00a0comics. They also transformed leading lady Rosa Salazar&#8217;s face, giving her unnaturally big eyes. This was something Cameron intended from the earliest incarnations of his adaptation,\u00a0wanting\u00a0to stay true to\u00a0Kishiro&#8217;s\u00a0design. He and Rodriguez\u00a0were determined\u00a0to translate this key element of the manga aesthetic to a\u00a0look derived from photorealism. But it\u2019s one that always captivates our imagination.\u00a0Set in\u202fa post-apocalyptic dystopia,\u00a0the story takes place\u00a0hundreds\u202fof years from now. Merciless war long ago wiped out most of the planet&#8217;s population. Those who survived struggle within a brutal class system. High above the scorched earth, the wealthy live in utopian cities like\u202fZalem, while below the poor cluster and scrape by in places like Iron City, where <em>Alita<\/em> is\u00a0primarily\u00a0set. The population of Iron City is made up of people and cyborgs with varying degrees of mech enhancements to their persons. Savvy scrappers dig through the trash dumped from\u00a0Zalem\u00a0onto Iron City, seeking metal and mechanical devices of which they might be able to make use.\u00a0This is how Dr. Dyson\u00a0Ido\u00a0(played\u00a0Christoph Waltz\u00a0in the movie) finds Alita (Rosa Salazar)\u2013or what&#8217;s left of her, more accurately.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a mad scientist-doctor type,\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Ido\u00a0uses robot scraps to enhance the lives of his patients. So, when he finds the badly broken Alita, he reconfigures her into a\u00a0new\u00a0form modeled after a pretty porcelain doll.\u00a0Once awakened, she has no memory of\u202fthe world or who she was before, so\u00a0Ido\u00a0takes her in and raises her as if she were his daughter. But Alita grows up faster than he&#8217;d like. Enchanted by the vibrant streets and experiences of Iron City, she begins to rebel with journeys into spooky spaces, flirtations with a\u00a0black-market\u00a0dealer\u00a0named Hugo\u202f(Keean\u00a0Johnson) and racing into the dangerous\u00a0and brutal\u00a0world of\u00a0the sport of\u00a0Motorball. Through all of this, Alita begins to realize she was built to be a\u00a0warrior and\u00a0pushes back against the delicate body and confining expectations of her loving\u00a0but constricting\u00a0father figure\u00a0as she hungers for change and revolution.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s The Sport Of\u00a0Motorball All About?<\/h2>\n<p>Forget the NFL or NASCAR or\u00a0Punkin\u00a0Chunkin. The high-octane spectator sport of choice for Iron City is\u00a0Motorball, a vicious cyberpunk version of roller derby. Players race around a treacherous track battling for control of the titular ball, because crossing the finish line with it<i>\u202fcould<\/i>\u202fmake you the winner\u2013could. Alternately, you could just be sure you&#8217;re the last player standing,\u00a0by any means necessary. And that bit can get quite\u202fbrutal, because while explosives are forbidden on the track,\u00a0virtually any other type of weapon is\u00a0allowed\u00a0and coming from the director of <em>Machete<\/em> and segments of <em>Grindhouse<\/em> we\u00a0can bet Rodriguez let his imagination run wild there.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For the\u00a0throngs of\u00a0Motorball\u00a0spectators, the\u00a0ultra-violent sport offers some escape from their day-to-day drudgery. For its players who risk life and limbs, the escape is more literal. Winning is a shot to make it out of Iron City and up to the fancy-schmancy\u202fcity in the sky.<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What\u00a0Is\u00a0ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL\u00a0Rated?<\/h2>\n<div style=\"width: 1786px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.atomtickets.com\/image\/upload\/h_960,q_auto\/v1512767798\/ingestion-images-archive-prod\/archive\/1512767797770_233304_cops_3.jpg\" alt=\"Rosa Salazar as Alita in 'Alita: Battle Angel'\" width=\"1776\" height=\"960\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rosa Salazar as Alita in &#8216;Alita: Battle Angel&#8217;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL boasts big, scary cyborgs with gear-sculpted mohawks, blades for hands, and a wild array of weaponry. But\u00a0the\u00a0action-packed adventure was created to be fun for\u202f<i>most<\/i>\u202fof the family. It&#8217;s rated PG-13 for mild employment of profanity, sex\/nudity, drug\/alcohol use, frightening scenes, and, considering\u00a0how the MPAA works,\u00a0plenty of cyborg violence, but little to no blood or guts.\u00a0Well, human guts,\u00a0anyway. There may be sprays of oil, or whatever cyborgs bleed. Your mileage (and that of your kiddos) may vary.\u00a0<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Will There Be ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL Sequels?<\/h2>\n<p>That&#8217;s the plan! Part of the thinking behind changing the name from BATTLE ANGEL ALITA to ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL is the latter allows for a sequel subtitle to be easily swapped in. Plus, this movie only covers a fraction of the story unfolded in\u00a0Kishiro&#8217;s\u00a0nine-volume manga series. All that remains to secure the future of this franchise is for Cameron and Rodriguez&#8217;s adaptation to conquer the box office.\u00a0With its release date being pushed back two months from December 21 to February 14, it has the dual benefit of having two more months to polish the complicated CGI and opening with less competition rather than in a busy holiday season. Will that be enough to pull the trigger on a sequel?
