Leading the pack was Jane Campion’s neo-Western The Power of the Dog, with the drama garnering an impressive 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director for Campion, Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch, and Best Supporting Actor/Actress nominations for Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, and Kodi-Smit McPhee. With her nomination, Jane Campion now becomes the first woman ever to be nominated for Best Director twice (her first nomination was in 1994 for The Piano).

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune followed on Power of the Dog‘s heels with 10 nominations, including for Best Picture. Notably, Villeneuve was snubbed for Best Director and it garnered no acting nominations, a potential sign that Academy voters still don’t view big-budget genre movies with the weight of more “serious” fare. Rounding out the major contenders, West Side Story and Belfast each earned seven nominations, while King Richard earned six. All are competing in the crowded Best Picture category this year.

As always, there were a few snubs, though this year was somewhat different in that a few movies surprisingly got shut out completely. Those include The Green Knight, The French Dispatch, and The Last Duel, none of which earned any nominations despite being critically lauded in a number of areas. Individual snubs being buzzed about online are the entire House of Gucci cast, Ben Affleck for The Last Duel AND The Tender Bar, Jennifer Hudson for Respect, Peter Dinklage in Cyrano, Rachel Zegler in West Side Story, and, arguably, Leonardo DiCaprio in Don’t Look Up.

While not as late as last year’s pandemic-pushed Oscars ceremony, the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony is also airing later than usual this year. They’ll be taking place on Sunday, March 27 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The show has also been confirmed as having a host this year, though the Academy has yet to reveal who it is.

Here’s the full list of nominees for the 94th Academy Awards.

And The 2022 Oscars Nominees Are…

BEST PICTURE
Belfast (Laura Berwick, Kenneth Branagh, Becca Kovacik, and Tamar Thomas, Producers)

CODA (Philippe Rousselet, Fabrice Gianfermi and Patrick Wachsberger, Producers)

Don’t Look Up (Adam McKay and Kevin Messick, Producers

Drive My Car (Teruhisa Yamamoto, Producer)

Dune (Mary Parent, Denis Villeneuve, and Cale Boyter, Producers)

King Richard (Tim White, Trevor White and Will Smith, Producers)

Licorice Pizza (Sara Murphy, Adam Somner and Paul Thomas Anderson, Producers)

Nightmare Alley (Guillermo del Toro, J.
