The day-long virtual event dropped a ton of news from the world of DC regarding upcoming movies, TV shows, video games, and more. But we’re here for movies, and DC brought the goods with new trailers and first-look footage from its upcoming projects, so many that I couldn’t even include them in our usual trailer roundup at the bottom of this article, but decided to include them in their own section. The second movie in David Gordon Green’s planned Halloween trilogy opened to a $50.3 million weekend at the domestic box office. That’s good enough to beat out A Quiet Place Part II ($47.5 million) as a horror opener and The Suicide Squad ($26.2 million) as an R-rated movie.

Halloween Kills‘ opening weekend continues to be a good sign that theaters are on the rebound after the disastrous past year and a half. Its numbers go beyond merely the pandemic era. It currently holds ninth place on the all-time list with Jackass 3D for the best opening weekend in October and the third-best horror movie opening ever in the month of October. As Covid vaccinations continue to increase, hopefully, we’ll continue to see opening weekends improve as people grow more comfortable heading back to in-person screenings.

Marvel Shifts Its 2022-23 Movie Slate

And a quick update as Hollywood experiences another round of schedule shuffling, this time from Marvel Studios, who are shifting every movie in their 2022-23 slate back by one release spot. The move isn’t related to any Covid-19 concerns or fears, but rather that Marvel’s production and post pipeline have gotten jammed up after the delays of the past year. Marvel has made the choice to shift in order to allow more time to finish these films. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, previously set for March 25, 2022, will now kick off summer and open May 6, 2022. That move boots Thor: Love and Thunder from that may date to July 8, 2022. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will then bump to November 11, 2022. Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels moves from that November date to February 17, 2023. Lastly, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania moves from that date to July 28, 2023. Marvel parent company Disney is also moving Indiana Jones 5 from July 29, 2022 to June 30, 2023.

Emily Blunt Joins Cillian Murphy In Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’

Speaking of the aforementioned A Quiet Place Part II, Emily Blunt is set to join Cillian Murphy, her costar in that film, in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Oppenheimer. Deadline reports that Blunt will play Katherine, known as Kitty, the wife of Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer in what is expected to be one of Nolan’s typically star-studded ensembles. As with all of his projects, Nolan will be writing the script as well as helming it. Oppenheimer, of course, was the theoretical physicist and head of the Los Alamos Laboratory who oversaw World War II’s infamous Manhattan Project, the top-secret research project that led to the creation of the world’s first atomic bomb and nuclear weapons. Oppenheimer is a fascinating figure in American history, a man who was a scientist who got pulled into politics. For many, he’s now viewed as a cautionary tale warning scientists that they never know how their discoveries will be utilized, no matter how good their intentions may have been. Oppenheimer himself knew their creation would change the world out of necessity, but not necessarily in a good way, famously thinking to himself as he watched the nuclear tests a line from the Bhagavad Gita, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” This will be Christopher Nolan’s first movie with Universal after parting ways with his longtime studio, Warner Bros., a few months ago. Oppenheimer is set for a release date of July 21, 2023.

Disney’s ‘Merlin’ Movie Finds A Director

Did you know that Disney is developing a Merlin movie? Disney is developing a Merlin movie! In fact, it’s officially tapped a director – well, a second director. Deadline reports that Love & Monsters director Michael Matthews will be directing. He replaces Ridley Scott, who was set to direct the film but eventually had to leave the project due to his schedule filling up. The movie will reportedly be based on T.A. Barron’s series of books, The Merlin Saga, which has become an international best-seller. Barron’s books follow a young Merlin as he comes into his powers, blending Welsh mythology, magic, and a deep reverence for nature. The film is still relatively early in development, with the latest draft of the script being penned by Chris Weitz (About a Boy, Rogue One).

Nicolas Cage Releases First Look At His Western ‘Butcher’s Crossing’

Last but not least, Nicolas Cage has released a first look at himself in his first-ever Western, Butcher’s Crossing. Set in the 1870s in the post-Civil War era, the movie revolves around a Harvard dropout who followed the urge to head West and seek his fortune. While on his journey, he crosses paths with Miller in a tiny Kansas frontier town known as Butcher’s Crossing, and his fate becomes intertwined with Miller and his group of buffalo hunters. Together, they embark on a harrowing journey that will test them physically as well as test their sanity.
