Movie news is once again starting to flow, with us bringing you a few hand-picked stories we think you’ll like.

Let’s hop to it.

‘Captain America 4’ Being Developed By ‘Falcon & Winter Soldier’ Showrunner Malcolm Spellman

Just when it appeared Captain America was no more in the MCU, THR broke the news that Captain America 4 is currently in development at Marvel Studios from Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman. There is a twist, however: It likely won’t be Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers slinging the shield this time, but Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson. Wilson, who previously went by the superhero moniker of Falcon, finally decided to accept the legacy Steve Rogers handed him at the end of Avengers: Endgame, and took up the Captain America mantle at the end of the Disney+ series, which just wrapped last weekend. Spellman will co-write the script with Dalan Musson, a staff writer on that same series. While he and his staff didn’t always stick the landing, Spellman is to be commended for taking audacious swings with the Marvel show, tackling weighty political and social issues in between the globe-trotting action. If Captain America 4 is the same, it can be expected to be a spiritual successor to both Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and the Disney+ series that revolved around the story of Mackie’s Falcon and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, a.k.a. The Winter Soldier. Whether or not Stan, Chris Evans, or other Marvel actors are set to appear is unknown. As it’s in the early stages of development, a director has also not yet been tapped.

Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ Movie Finds Its Director

Disney’s latest film to be based on one of its iconic rides has found a director: The studio’s Haunted Mansion reboot has tapped Dear White People director Justin Simien to direct based on a script by Katie Dippold, who wrote the most recent draft. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich will be producing through their Rideback banner with Rideback’s Nick Reynolds serving as executive producer; Lin and Eirich also produced Disney’s hit Aladdin. Reportedly, Disney has wanted to work with Simien for a while and has talked to him about multiple projects. This one is the one that made sense for all parties after Simien brought to them his idea for the reboot, which will reportedly take a completely different approach from the moderately successful 2003 movie starring Eddie Murphy. Simien has been a rising star for a few years now, with his Sundance hit Dear White People being picked up by Netflix as a series, and then making the other equally huge Sundance hit Bad Hair. Haunted Mansion will be his first major studio production. Deadline was the first to break the news.

Russell Crowe Joins ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ As Zeus

While veteran actor Russell Crowe has been rumored for a while to be joining the Thor: Love & Thunder cast, there was great speculation as to who he might be playing. However, on a recent episode of the JOY Breakfast with the Murphys podcast, Crowe not only confirmed he was in the upcoming Thor movie, but also that he’d be stepping into the role of Zeus, revealing his plans for the day by saying, “I’m gonna get on my bicycle. I’m gonna ride up to Disney Fox Studios, and around about 9:15 I shall be Zeus!” Interestingly, he also confirmed that it was his last day of filming with, “It’s for Thor. It’s my last day of Zeus-ing about and I’m going to enjoy it.” With the addition of Crowe, the cast of Thor 4 just got even more star-studded. Along with Thor movie veterans Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson, the movie will also see Guardians of the Galaxy alums Chris Pratt and Karen Gillen joining the cast, with Matt Damon, Sam Neill, and Luke Hemsworth reprising their comical roles of Stage Loki, Stage Odin and Stage Thor. Newcomer Melissa McCarthy will be playing the stage version of Hela, and Christian Bale is set to play Gorr the God-Butcher, the antagonist of the film. Thor: Love & Thunder is currently set for release on May 6th, 2022.

Oscar Nunez Joins Sandra Bullock & Channing Tatum In ‘The Lost City of D’

Sandra Bullock and Oscar Nunez will be reuniting once again on the screen; Variety reports that Nunez is set to join The Lost City of D alongside Bullock and Channing Tatum. It’s unclear what role Nunez will play, but it’s likely to be one with a comedic bent; Nunez and Bullock were last together in 2009’s The Proposal, where Nunez played a scene-stealing townsperson obsessed with Bullock’s character. The action-adventure rom-com, said to be in the vein of Romancing the Stone, is the perfect vehicle for all three actors to stretch their considerable comedic chops. Bullock plays an awkward romance novelist who gets stuck on a book tour with her handsome but not-too-bright cover model, played by Tatum. While on their book tour, however, the pair get kidnapped and end up in a romp through the jungle. Bullock delivered this cheeky statement on the news of Nunez joining the cast: “I feel so blessed to be able to be in his comedic presence again after all these years. His ability to convey deep emotion while performing a lap dance in The Proposal was not lost on me.” The cast will also boast the star power of Daniel Radcliffe, who will be playing the film’s antagonist, comedian Patti Harrison, Ed Helms, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, with – no, this isn’t a typo – Brad Pitt popping up in a cameo appearance. This is quickly shaping up to be what looks like a very fun project.

Adam Wingard In Talks To Return For Next Monsterverse Movie

Fresh of his monster (hah) hit Godzilla vs. Kong, THR has reported that director Adam Wingard is in talks to direct the next movie in the MonsterVerse, Son of Kong. With the MonsterVerse franchise looking to wind down with GvK, the success of that movie has reportedly made Legendary reconsider and talks have quietly been happening. No writer is attached yet as talks are just in preliminary stages, but Wingard was intimately involved in the myth and worldbuilding of the MonsterVerse with Godzilla vs. Kong and he and Legendary have been bouncing around plenty of ideas, including a potential Son of Kong movie. Even in a pandemic year, GvK is the second-highest-grossing MonsterVerse movie behind 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which brought in $566 million worldwide. Currently, even with the movie opening the same day on HBO Max and movie theaters still operating at limited capacity, Godzilla vs. Kong has grossed over $400 million globally and still has yet to open in a few large markets. Much like Kong at one point in the film, the MonsterVerse, which appeared to be down for count permanently, once again has new life.

DC FanDome Online Returning in 2021

Last, a quick bit of news for DC fans: After the success of last August’s DC FanDome, the company has announced they’re doing another event this year. FanDome, which was DC’s virtual version of Comic-Con, boasted a number of stars across its movie, TV, and comic book properties, with the trailers, announcements, and footage that would normally drop at SDCC. However, with the lingering coronavirus still having things up in the air, and DC’s desire to funnel everything toward HBO Max under its own proprietary control, the company apparently decided it was successful enough to do again. DC announced the news across its social media accounts:

The epic global event is back!
Return to #DCFanDome 10.16.21 pic.twitter.com/ZifZGCPOig
— DC (@DCComics) April 28, 2021

Expect lots of news out of that event, just like last year.

Trailers of the Week

West Side Story

Could this be Steven Spielberg moving into his musical phase?

The Tomorrow War

Who doesn’t love a fun sci-fi adventure romp starring Chris Pratt?

And lastly…

Putting the Mustache Back In Justice League

The jokers at YouTube channel Corridor Crew went back and hilariously CGIed Henry Cavill’s moustache back into Justice League.

Hollywood was on temporary pause but productions are gearing back up, release dates continue to be tweaked in preparation for theaters reopening, and things are slowly starting to return to normal – or at least, our temporary new normal.
