However, with the world in a state of seemingly perpetual flux, and to paraphrase Passover tradition, why is this month different than all other months? At this point in our pandemic-driven lives,\u00a0it\u00a0kind of isn\u2019t.\u00a0More and more schools are opting for virtual classrooms instead of in-person courses and theaters haven\u2019t reopened.\u00a0So\u00a0what are people supposed to do apart from find ways to safely pass the time?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, while August may indeed be a &#8220;dump month&#8221; and there are far more options to comb through this month than previous This Month in Horror entries, I think it\u2019s a mix of tradition and necessity. Plus, as we start entering the fall season, there need to be horror movies that get people talking so that &#8220;31 Days of Halloween&#8221; movies picks can be locked and loaded well ahead of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This month\u2019s offerings are so diverse, it\u2019s genuinely impressive. There\u2019s something for everyone, from time travel horror to aquatic terrors, folklore chills to serial killer thrills, and so much more. There are variations throughout Latin America, with each country having its own unique spin on the tale (including my own company\u2019s release\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/panama-horror-movie-diablo-rojo-pty\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Diablo\u00a0Rojo\u00a0PTY<\/em><\/a>). The last major release was\u00a0<em>The Curse of La Llorona<\/em>, which was shoehorned into\u00a0<em>The Conjuring<\/em>\u00a0universe. The film stretches every penny of its&nbsp;low-budget&nbsp;into a dollar, crafting something that\u2019s sharp, tight, scary, and memorable. The first time I saw this, I was hooked from the beginning and couldn\u2019t take my eyes away until the credits finished rolling. Reviews are already calling it an \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whattowatch.com\/reviews\/black-water-abyss-review-caves-and-crocs-make-for-fierce-thrills\" target=\"_blank\">accomplished thriller<\/a>\u201d and say that it provides \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thelastthingisee.com\/2020\/08\/black-water-abyss-2020-movie-review.html\" target=\"_blank\">tension, scares, and gnashing crocodile teeth.<\/a>\u201d\u00a0If your horror needs to have terrifying maws, look no further than this one. Just don\u2019t stare too long into the abyss.\u00a0Apparently\u00a0that leads to disastrous results.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. \u2018Sputnik\u2019\u00a0\u2013\u00a0August 14\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sputnik - Official Trailer | HD | IFC Midnight\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qh-oOnZ2Di0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Subgenre: \u201c<\/strong><strong>Can We Stop Bringing Shit&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>From<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;Outer Space Back Home?<\/strong><strong>\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Official Synopsis:&nbsp;<\/strong>Due to her controversial methods, young doctor Tatiana&nbsp;Yurievna&nbsp;(Oksana&nbsp;Akinshina) is on the precipice of losing her medical license. Her career may not be over, though. After she\u2019s recruited by the military, Tatiana is brought to a secure science research facility to assess a very special case, that of Konstantin&nbsp;Sergeyevich&nbsp;(Pyotr&nbsp;Fyodorov), a cosmonaut who survived a mysterious space accident and has returned to Earth with a unique condition: there\u2019s something living inside of him that only shows itself late at night. The military has nefarious plans for it. Tatiana wants to stop it from killing Konstantin. And the creature itself thrives on destruction.<em>&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why You Should Check It Out:&nbsp;<\/strong>This looks kind of like Russia\u2019s answer to&nbsp;<em>Splice<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>The Thing<\/em>, which is 100% up my alley.&nbsp;Sci-fi and horror are common bedfellows. After all, what\u2019s more terrifying than the unknown, whether it come from within or beyond the stars? In&nbsp;<em>Sputnik<\/em>, at least according to the trailer, we\u2019re not exactly sure which it is\u2026and that\u2019s the deliciously creepy part.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. \u2018The Silencing\u2019 \u2013 August\u00a014\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Silencing Official Trailer (2020) - Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Annabelle Wallis\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tPksZyMGVKk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Subgenre: \u201c<\/strong><strong>If You Can\u2019t Trust A Bush&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>In<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;The Woods, Who Can You Trust?\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Official Synopsis:&nbsp;<\/strong>A reformed hunter (Nikolaj&nbsp;Coster-Waldau) and a sheriff (Annabelle Wallis) are caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse when they set out to track a killer who may have kidnapped the hunter\u2019s daughter five years ago.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why You Should Check It Out:\u00a0<\/strong>Serial killer horror-thrillers are another style of movie that is totally my jam.\u00a0The Silencing\u00a0looks like it takes elements from\u00a0The Silence of the Lambs\u00a0and mixes it with the atmosphere and aesthetic of\u00a0Insomnia\u00a0to create something oppressive and unsettling, which is\u00a0exactly\u00a0what I want from these kinds of films. Make me uncomfortable. Make me squirm. Make me feel like I need to take a shower once it\u2019s over. Rack up the bodies, I say! Commence with the gore, I plead!&nbsp;Gimme&nbsp;monsters, I implore!&nbsp;<em>The Barge People<\/em>&nbsp;looks like it\u2019s ready to do all that and a whole&nbsp;helluva&nbsp;lot more. We\u2019ve all had that terrible relationship that we wish would just go away but always somehow manages to rear its ugly head. If you\u2019ve felt powerless to those\u00a0moments, here\u2019s a movie that says you can fight back, that you can regain control. And if a few bodies are left in the wake, so be it.
