I call it a “relaunch” instead of a “reboot,” as a number of old, familiar faces will be returning to the franchise.

It was previously reported that David Arquette would be reprising his role as Dewey Riley in the upcoming movie. Now, another OG franchise star is set to join: THR reports that Courtney Cox will be reprising her role of reporter Gale Weathers in the remake, which will be directed by Ready or Not directors Matthew Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The script was written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

The Scream franchise, which consists of four movies and a TV series for MTV, has been a cash cow over the years. Starting with the original 1996 Scream, the movies have generated over $600 million at the box office – not bad considering their combined budget amounted to less than $120 million. The movies, which were directed by the late horror master Wes Craven and written by ’90s teen horror master Kevin Williamson, reinvigorated the slasher genre in the ’90s, largely by poking fun at the tropes and clichés of the genre while still being genuinely scary moments. Scream‘s success paved the way for a number of teen slasher films in the ’90s like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later.

The relaunch, currently being called Scream 5, revolves around a woman returning to her hometown to discover who has been committing a series of murders. It’s unclear where Cox’s character of Gale Weathers will fit into the story, but it will be interesting. Gale’s arc in the Scream franchise was an interesting one. Originally starting out as a minor antagonist in the original movie and a pushy, bossy investigative reporter, Gale eventually evolved into a main character and hero alongside Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott in subsequent movies. The fourth movie ends with Gale, ever the survivor, still alive after an attack, and being the one to piece together the identity of the killer from her hospital bed.

Production on the reboot is set to take place in Wilmington, North Carolina, though a production start date has not yet been nailed down. Scream 5 is expected to be released sometime next year.

Paramount’s relaunch of the Scream franchise is chugging full-steam ahead.
