This week,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blumhouse and Universal shocked audiences and critics with a smart and now successful reboot of the Invisible Man IP from director Leigh Whannell. Who saw this coming?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week\u2019s Top Earner\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018The Invisible Man\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GyYbo_bHylw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal has come a long way since it nixed its plans for a \u201cDark Universe\u201d of movies to rival the shared Marvel universe films. After <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mummy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> failed to launch in 2017, the studio refocused and recast <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/the-invisible-man\/293548\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Invisible Man<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be a low budget, standalone horror movie. And the box office results are readily apparent: $29 million domestically and $49.2 million worldwide off of just an estimated $7 million budget. Seeing really is believing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonic the Hedgehog <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Paramount) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Call of the Wild <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(20th Century) predictably dropped two spots on the charts this week to make room for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Invisible Man<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call of the Wild <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">faced a particularly steep 46.7% drop in ticket sales despite an increase of over 100 theaters since last week. That\u2019s dangerous news for a film with an estimated budget of $150 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-12016\" src=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/box-office-recap-Mar-1st-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/box-office-recap-Mar-1st-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/box-office-recap-Mar-1st-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/box-office-recap-Mar-1st-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/box-office-recap-Mar-1st-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/box-office-recap-Mar-1st-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/box-office-recap-Mar-1st-1000x1000.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/box-office-recap-Mar-1st.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One other wide release landed in the Top 10, and that\u2019s the FUNimation anime series spin-off movie <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which debuted in over 1,200 theaters to $5.1 million in North America alone. Worldwide, the anime film has already hit a superpowered $23.5 million and counting. That\u2019s a huge upgrade from the previous 2018 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Hero Academia <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">film, which amassed just $6 million overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birds of Prey <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Warner Bros) dropped three spots to #6 below <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bad Boys for Life <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sony) after losing 441 theaters. It was <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/impractical-jokers-the-movie-is-a-legit-hit-as-trutvs-first-ever-theatrical-release\/\">nearly overtaken by truTV&#8217;s first feature release,<em> Impractical Jokers: The Movie<\/em><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which jumped four spots to #7 after expanding its release to 1,900 theaters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1917 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Universal) managed a decent hold after dropping one spot to #8, above <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brahms: The Boy II <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(STX), which dropped four spots to #9, as well as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fantasy Island <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sony), which similarly fell four spots to #10. Looks like both films will have their dreams crushed by next weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And They\u2019re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jumanji: The Next Level <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sony) is finally dropping out of the Top 10 after a stellar 12 weeks, maintaining solid box office legs throughout the holiday season and beyond with $790.8 million worldwide ($313.7 million domestic).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Neon) has started to shed theaters after its Oscars boost, so box office has slowed down for the massively successful South Korean film, which made $227 million against a small budget of just $11.4 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Photograph <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Universal) plummeted to #15 after just three weeks at the box office. The romance drama might actually lose money despite its low production budget of $16 million. It only managed to gross $19 million worldwide, which probably won\u2019t cover expected marketing costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it for this weekend.
