I certainly do; I remember seeing it in theaters with my sisters and marveling as to how they made the giant sets for tiny people, transported to a world where everyone was Ant-Man size and normal proportions and perspective went out the window.

Now, Deadline is reporting that star Rick Moranis is set to return for Disney’s new Honey, I Shrunk the Kids movie, Shrunk. The movie will also star Josh Gad, who will play the son of Moranis’ Wayne Szalinski. Gad’s character aspires to be a brilliant scientist like his dad, but – also like his dad – accidentally shrinks his kids in the process. Shunk will see the return of Joe Johnston, the original director.

If Moranis does indeed return, it will mark his first feature, live-action role in over 20 years. The famously reclusive actor was once one of the biggest comedy stars in the 80s and 90s, getting his start as an SCTV alumnus before going on to star in classic comedies like Strange Brew, the Ghostbusters franchise, Spaceballs, Little Shop of Horrors, The Flintstones, and the Honey movies. But in 1997, he stepped away from acting and the chaos of Hollywood in order to be a stay-at-home dad and focus on raising his children, who had lost their mom, Ann, to breast cancer a few years earlier. In the rare interviews he’s given in the years since, the famously protective dad has never expressed regret about stepping away, only occasionally taking a one-off voice role.

But with his kids grown and out of the house, Moranis will be making his big-screen return once again. Perhaps it’s just a one-off role and Disney offered him a story that he liked too much to pass up. Or perhaps he’ll quietly retire to live his life again once the movie is wrapped and he’s passed the torch to Gad. But with his upcoming participation in the Martin Scorcese-directed documentary An Afternoon With SCTV, it looks like the comedy legend might be cautiously dipping his toe back into the comeback waters. If he is, so much the better – the world will be a funnier place for it.

Children of the late ’80s and early ’90s will remember the classic Rick Moranis movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and its slightly less successful sequel Honey, I Blew Up the Kid.
