The first surprise was the film that was most nominated: Joker. I’m not sure even its most ardent supporters could have guessed it would lead the pack of nominees with 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director. Three films were right behind Joker, however, with The Irishman, 1917, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood each earning 10 apiece. A few others garnered a very respectable half a dozen nominations each, including Little Women, Jojo Rabbit, Parasite, and Marriage Story.

However, there were plenty of snubs to go around. Like with the BAFTAs, women – even Greta Gerwig – were shut out of the Best Director category again. Other snubs were Jennifer Lopez, who many thought should receive a nod for her work in Hustlers, and Shia LaBeouf, who was an early double contender for acting and writing categories for Honey Boy. Also inexplicably shut out were the Safdie brothers and Uncut Gems, which most expected to get a few awards, not the least of which should have been one for Adam Sandler as Best Actor. And, of course, it’s a shocker that Frozen 2 is shut out of the animated category.

For the second year in a row, the Oscars will be without a host. Last year, it was due to the controversy that surrounded Kevin Hart; this year it’s a deliberate choice. It seemed to work out fine last year, so why not? The 2020 Academy Awards will air on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on the evening of Sunday, February 9th.
