This week,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Frozen 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remained #1 for the third week in a row, while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playmobil: The Movie <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debuted with one of the worst opening weekends in box office history.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week\u2019s Top Earner (For The Third Week In A Row) \u2013 \u2018Frozen 2\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WrFYyvXBwbE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite sizable competition from other mainstream films like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knives Out <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ford v Ferrari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Disney\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/frozen-ii\/240948\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen 2 <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has managed to outperform expectations yet again and collect $34.7 million domestically in its third weekend, more than double the next film on the charts. One reason for the animated film\u2019s continued success is its dominance in family programming, as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playmobil: The Movie <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(STX) was dead on arrival this weekend with just $660,000 in over 2,300 theaters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has now made $337.6 million domestically, and worldwide it\u2019s at $919.6 million, so <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/frozen-2-box-office-countdown\/\">not far away from becoming Disney\u2019s next billion-dollar movie<\/a>. The sequel had a tremendous early run pointing at the possibility of actually outgrossing its predecessor, which was the highest-grossing animated film of all time until <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lion King <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrived this past summer. Due to a lack of new releases, the Top 10 chart looks strikingly similar to last week. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knives Out <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Lionsgate), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ford v Ferrari <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Fox), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queen &amp; Slim <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Universal), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sony) all stayed in their respective positions while each dipping somewhere between 45-56% (the strongest hold from last week was, in fact, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queen &amp; Slim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The true outlier on the charts this week was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/dark-waters\/297921\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Waters <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Focus Features), which expanded to wide release and is now playing in over 2,000 theaters. Elsewhere, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Aeronauts <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">debuted in just 50 theaters but appears to be a theatrical dud with just $30,000 collected thus far before its release on Amazon Prime Video next week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playmobil: The Movie <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(STX), which debuted at #14, not even besting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Neon), a film that has been in theaters for over nine weeks. STX inherited the animated attempt to recapture the financial success of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The LEGO Movie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it\u2019s clear the lack of marketing and poor reviews led to this playdate getting stood up by just about everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And They\u2019re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/box-office-insider-frozen-2-knives-out-winner\/\">one film fell off the Top 10 from last week to this week<\/a>, and it was almost <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Warner Bros). In a photo finish of just $30,000, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Christmas <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Universal)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dipped from #9 to #11 with $1.01 million in its fifth weekend. Assuming marketing costs were well-contained, the romantic holiday comedy looks to be a modest hit with $84 million worldwide off an estimated budget of $30 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it for this weekend.
