This week,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Joker<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finally said \u201chasta la vista\u201d to the top spot to make room for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terminator: Dark Fate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which had a far stronger performance overseas than stateside.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week\u2019s Top Earner \u2013 \u2018Terminator: Dark Fate\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10789\" src=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/box-office-recap-nov-1-3-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/box-office-recap-nov-1-3-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/box-office-recap-nov-1-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/box-office-recap-nov-1-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/box-office-recap-nov-1-3-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/box-office-recap-nov-1-3-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/box-office-recap-nov-1-3-1000x1000.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/box-office-recap-nov-1-3.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every critic gave <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Fate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a thumbs up, but overall, <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/terminator-dark-fate-review\/\">reviews were mostly positive<\/a> for the new film from Tim Miller, which Paramount released in early November despite this action flick feeling so much like a summer blockbuster. Regardless, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Fate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulled in $29 million domestically over the weekend, which is a slight uptick from the opening weekend for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terminator: Genisys<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (not adjusted for inflation).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But let\u2019s really crunch these numbers. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Fate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had the second-lowest opening weekend <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-terminator-dark-fate\/\">of all six Terminator films<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rise of the Machines <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is still #1 in this regard with $44 million). This is despite <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Fate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having the widest release ever for one of these films (over 4,000 theaters) and years of inflation to beef up those numbers comparatively. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/terminator-dark-fate\/194671\"><em>Terminator:<\/em>\u00a0<\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Fate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has the second-largest production budget of these films ($185 million, reportedly).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All that said, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Fate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might just experience its own salvation in the form of international box office numbers, including a release in China. Worldwide, it\u2019s made over $123.6 million, and it will need far more than that to make up for its high budget and marketing costs, or else this franchise\u2026*puts on sunglasses*&#8230;won\u2019t be back.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Place\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Joker\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TIzbgL4lY6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warner Bros is having a fantastic year at the box office when it comes to its DC Comics films. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aquaman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">became their highest-grossing film ever at the start of 2019, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shazam! <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was a surprise success and well-reviewed franchise starter, and now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/joker\/276125\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joker <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is on its way to becoming their next billion-dollar movie and <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/joker-review\/\">perhaps a contender at the Academy Awards<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in its fifth week, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t just still in the Top 5 box office, it\u2019s #2, which is seriously impressive staying power considering how many other wide releases have come and gone since early October. It made $13.5 million domestically this weekend (only a 27.7% drop) and now dances to the tune of $933.5 million worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Third\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Maleficent: Mistress of Evil\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GEWqjeKcW-U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Disney live-action-sequel-to-the-remake is #3 for its Week 3, scoring another $12.1 million domestically after gaining 30 theaters and dropping 37.1% overall. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mistress of Evil <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been switching spots with both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harriet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depending on the day, but the film\u2019s true benefactor has been the international market, which accounts for 78% of its worldwide box office of $383.2 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s still only about half of what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maleficent <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made in 2014, and with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just around the corner, Disney will have to refocus their efforts on that film\u2019s box office success moving forward. Of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/maleficent-mistress-of-evil\/273604\"><em>Maleficent: Mistress of Evil<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">still has at least two more weeks of relatively low competition in the family film space, save for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Addams Family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terminator: Dark Fate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wasn\u2019t the only new game in tinsel town. North America welcomed three other new wide releases to the Top 10, and the biggest success story here was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harriet <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Focus Features), which grossed $12 million in over 2,000 theaters and landed at #4 on the charts. That\u2019s great news for a biopic with a reported budget of only $17 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motherless Brooklyn <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Warner Bros) had a weaker showing by comparison, making just $3.5 million in over 1,300 theaters, landing at #9. And then there\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arctic Dogs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Entertainment Studios), which hit over 2,800 theaters but landed at #10 with only $3.1 million domestically. With a reported budget of $50 million, that makes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arctic Dogs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the biggest flops of the year, despite having one of the lowest budgets of the year for an animated film of this scope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both films made less than the other four releases on the Top 10, which all fell two spots to make way for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Fate <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harriet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That includes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Addams Family <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(United Artists), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zombieland: Double Tap <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sony), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Countdown <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(STX), and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black and Blue <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sony).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And They\u2019re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four films entered. Four other films were crossed off. And each one performed worse than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jojo Rabbit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are still in limited release and nabbed the #11 and #12 spots respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lighthouse <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(A24) fell five spots to #13, despite playing in twice as many theaters as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and nearly four times as many theaters as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jojo Rabbit<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The otherworldly black-and-white thriller from Robert Eggers has made almost $7 million domestically, well above its reported budget of about $4 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini Man <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Paramount) fell seven spots to #14, winding down its theatrical run after just a month at the box office. It\u2019s still playing in over 1,800 theaters, but we\u2019ll likely see that number plummet by next week. The film reportedly cost $138 million to make, and its worldwide total now stands at $161.9 million. Due to marketing costs and most of those numbers coming from international markets, it\u2019s likely <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini Man <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will lose money for the studio in the long run.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Current War: Director\u2019s Cut <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(101 Studios) fell six spots to #15, ending its brief dalliance on the Top 10 with $9.3 million worldwide against a reported budget of $30 million, making this one a sure flop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abominable <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Universal)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fell even farther despite its warm reception from critics: seven spots to #17, wrapping up its six-week run on the Top 10 chart. The DreamWorks Animation film has made $159.6 million worldwide, which is more than double its reported budget of $75 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it for this weekend.
