This has been the year of live-action Disney remakes, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maleficent: Mistress of Evil <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marks one of the first direct sequels to this new era of respun classics. Unless you count <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alice Through the Looking Glass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which I certainly won\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week\u2019s Top Earner \u2013 \u2018Maleficent: Mistress of Evil\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10633\" src=\"https:\/\/blog-proxy.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/box-office-recap-maleficent-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/box-office-recap-maleficent-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/box-office-recap-maleficent-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/box-office-recap-maleficent-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/box-office-recap-maleficent-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/box-office-recap-maleficent-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/box-office-recap-maleficent-1000x1000.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/box-office-recap-maleficent.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disney\u2019s latest villain-turned-hero take on the original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeping Beauty <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pulled in $36 million domestically in its opening weekend. That\u2019s about $9 million short of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dumbo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from earlier this year. But thanks to strong international numbers, the sorceress supreme managed to push its worldwide total to a solid $154.1 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can point to a few culprits for this mixed showing. For one thing, Disney released <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/maleficent-mistress-of-evil\/273604\">Maleficent: Mistress of Evil<\/a><\/em>\u00a0o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n fewer screens than both the first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maleficent <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dumbo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0just 3,790. That\u2019s a lot compared to non-Disney films, of course, but we\u2019ve gotten used to seeing Disney films on this scale reaching well into the mid-4,000s. Additionally, critics have been mostly middling-to-negative with their reviews. (Personally, <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/maleficent-mistress-of-evil-review\/\">we liked it<\/a>, but it hasn&#8217;t been for everyone.) The film\u2019s ray of hope may lie in its splendid Cinemascore of \u201cA,\u201d which could give it the word of mouth needed to boost those domestic numbers before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frozen 2 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arrives in late November.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Place\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Joker\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TIzbgL4lY6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warner Bros\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/joker\/276125\">Joker<\/a> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might just have the last laugh. It\u2019s proven to have tremendous staying power, dipping just 47.7% in its third week with $29.2 million domestically. Worldwide, the clown phoenix of crime has earned a staggering $737.5 million, already outgrossing both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Man of Steel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justice League<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s also now the <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/box-office-insider-joker-makes-a-killing-and-breaks-the-october-record\/\">highest-grossing R-rated film domestically in 2019<\/a> and the third highest-grossing R-rated comic book film behind <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadpool 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If it manages to surpass both of those films in the coming weeks, that will make for one hell of a punchline.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Third\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Zombieland: Double Tap\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sLdOdPOIOHI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of R-rated movies, the long-awaited sequel to 2009\u2019s surprise hit <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zombieland<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> debuted at #3, grossing $26.7 million domestically and $5.3 million overseas. That\u2019s only $2 million higher than the first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zombieland<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that\u2019s not even adjusting for inflation. Compared to other zombie films of this nature, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/zombieland-double-tap\/275948\"><em>Zombieland: Double Tap<\/em><\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is actually near the top of the list in its opening weekend, but that might be more indicative of how slow the zombie-movie box office has been in recent years, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World War Z <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being the last major blockbuster to find success in the genre. Of course, it\u2019s only a matter of time before the dead will rise in cinematic interest again.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most films in the Top 10 this week dropped just two spots to make way for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maleficent: Mistress of Evil <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zombieland: Double Tap<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At #4, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Addams Family <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(United Artists)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only suffered a 47% drop after gaining 95 theaters in its second week. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gemini Man <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Paramount)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made about half that number at #5, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abominable <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(DreamWorks\/Universal) dipped just 42.2% at #6 despite losing 849 theaters, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Downtown Abbey <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Focus Features) similarly maintained its slowing momentum at #7.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Top 10 gets more competitive once we get to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judy <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Roadside Attractions), which dipped just one spot to #8 after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hustlers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(STX) fell three spots to #9 in its sixth week. With two new wide releases hitting next week, it\u2019s likely the Top 10 will be bidding <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hustlers <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adieu by next Sunday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, we have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It: Chapter Two <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Warner Bros) at #10 after seven weeks at the box office. It just barely edged out <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parasite <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Neon), which made $1.24 million in just 33 theaters. By comparison, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It: Chapter Two <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is still playing on over 1,500 screens.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And They\u2019re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jexi <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Lionsgate) dropped out of the Top 10 in just its second week, making just $1.21 million in over 2,300 theaters at #12. That\u2019s a per-theater average of just $521. So far, the R-rated comedy has made $5.7 million overall, which is about half its estimated production and promotion budget of at least $12 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ad Astra <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Fox) fell three spots to #13, winding down its five-week run with $124.3 million worldwide. That\u2019s higher than the reported production budget of about $100 million, but the film likely lost money for Disney due to marketing costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it for this weekend.
