Another Oscar-winner is joining the cast of The Witches remake.
Octavia Spencer is in talks to appear opposite Anne Hathaway in Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of the Roald Dahl novel, reports Variety. Spencer, who won Best Supporting Actress for her work in “The Help,” will play a “resourceful grandmother of the main character, a seven-year-old boy” who struggles to take down a coven of child-hating witches.
Newcomers Jahzir Bruno and Codie-Lei Eastick are in negotiations to play the boy and his friend, respectively.
Anne Hathaway signed on to play the Grand High Witch back in Jan. 2019, a role previously played by Anjelica Huston in the 1990 film directed by the late Nicolas Roeg.
In addition to directing the film, Zemeckis is also producing with Oscar-winners Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro also wrote a previous draft of the script.
“The Witches” is set to hit theaters sometime in 2020.
